SLB and Ormat Forge Partnership to Boost Geothermal Asset Development in the Middle East

Date:

New Agreement to Propel Geothermal Technology Forward

In an exciting development for the renewable energy sector, SLB (NYSE: SLB), a global leader in energy technology, has teamed up with Ormat Technologies (NYSE: ORA), a prominent player in geothermal and renewable energy. This partnership aims to expedite the progress of integrated geothermal assets, specifically focusing on Enhanced Geothermal Systems (EGS). Unlike traditional geothermal resources, EGS is designed to tap into geothermal energy in areas beyond existing reservoirs.

Streamlining Geothermal Project Development

The collaboration between SLB and Ormat is focused on creating a smoother path from project concept to actual power generation. Central to this initiative will be the development, piloting, and scaling of EGS solutions to encourage widespread adoption. A significant step in this direction will involve the construction of an EGS pilot project at an Ormat facility, allowing for comprehensive testing and refinement of these new technologies.

Key Highlights of the Collaboration

  • Joint Technology and Project Development: Both SLB and Ormat will collaborate to design and deploy integrated geothermal assets and EGS systems that are optimized for durability and efficiency. This synergy will leverage Ormat’s extensive experience in power plant design and operations alongside SLB’s technical expertise in subsurface reservoir engineering and well construction.
  • EGS Pilot Project: The pilot project will serve as a testing ground for the integrated solution within an existing Ormat facility, enabling the teams to cover every stage of development and validate commercial scalability for EGS.
  • Commercial Scale-Up: Following the pilot, the partnership will seek to expand EGS commercialization efforts for independent power producers, utility companies, and other stakeholders, including those in the data center sector.

Addressing the Growing Demand for Clean Energy

According to Gavin Rennick, president of New Energy at SLB, there is an increasing demand for energy, driven partly by advancements in AI and other technological sectors. Rennick emphasized the need for rapid progress towards clean and reliable energy solutions. The collaboration with Ormat is viewed as a way to enhance both traditional hydrothermal energy and EGS technologies, making them viable options capable of scaling to meet future energy needs.

Goals of the EGS Pilot Project

The inaugural joint project is set to accelerate the development of crucial technologies necessary for EGS, while also refining the integration of these systems with surface facilities to boost energy production and overall sustainability.

Commitment to Sustainable Energy Solutions

“Partnering with SLB allows us to accelerate the rollout of integrated geothermal assets and EGS solutions,” stated Doron Blachar, CEO of Ormat Technologies. He highlighted the importance of scalable and sustainable energy solutions as the energy transition moves forward, particularly in light of rising AI-driven energy demands. Blachar also expressed optimism that the successful pilot project would pave the way for an expanded development pipeline in the geothermal sector.

The Potential of Enhanced Geothermal Systems

Traditional geothermal energy systems depend on naturally occurring hot water or steam found underground, making them geographically limited. In contrast, EGS can create thermal reservoirs within hot rock formations, allowing water to circulate and carry energy to the surface for electricity generation. The U.S. Department of Energy envisions that next-generation geothermal technologies could unlock up to 90 gigawatts (GW) of energy by 2050, with potential capabilities of reaching 300 GW within the United States alone.
