In contrast, EGS can create thermal reservoirs within hot rock formations, allowing water to circulate and carry energy to the surface for electricity generation. The U.S. Department of Energy envisions that next-generation geothermal technologies could unlock up to 90 gigawatts (GW) of energy by 2050, with potential capabilities of reaching 300 GW within the United States alone.
