Museums Without Borders: ICOM Dubai 2025 Sets the Stage

Opening Remarks Inspire Global Collaboration

In a significant moment for cultural institutions worldwide, Emma Nardi, the president of the International Council of Museums (ICOM), addressed an enthusiastic crowd at the launch of ICOM Dubai 2025. Her remarks resonated throughout Sheikh Rashid Hall at the Dubai World Trade Centre, setting a hopeful tone for the future of museums as vital community hubs.

The conversation that begins here in Dubai will influence how museums engage with the world for years to come,” Nardi stated, capturing the essence of the event. Over the course of five days, delegates from various cultural backgrounds gathered, some wearing interpreter headsets, contributing to a rich tapestry of dialogue about the evolving role of museums in a rapidly changing global landscape.

A Vision for Change: Museums as Networks

“Museums have no borders; they are a network,” Nardi emphasized, underlining the need for museums to adapt and thrive. This gathering marks a milestone, as it is the inaugural conference held in the Middle East, Africa, and South Asia region, running until November 17. Under the patronage of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Vice President and Ruler of Dubai, this year’s theme—The Future of Museums in Rapidly Changing Communities—highlights the importance of museums in today’s society.

Sheikha Latifa bint Mohammed, chairwoman of the Dubai Culture & Arts Authority, echoed these sentiments, stating, “Museums are not merely guardians of the past but living archives that prepare us for the future.” Her keynote speech reinforced the idea that museums are essential in fostering cultural understanding and community engagement.

Celebrating a Shared Cultural Identity

The conference is more than just an event; it embodies a shared vision of the role culture plays in shaping humanity’s future. Sheikha Latifa articulated the significance of this moment: “This day is an encounter between many worlds.” Delegates carried varied stories from their communities, reflecting the richness of their heritage and the power of collaboration in a globalized world.

With Dubai taking center stage, the event spotlights the region’s cultural heritage. Sheikha Latifa remarked, “Hosting this conference in Dubai is our way of telling the world that the story of culture is written every day.” The gathering serves as an opportunity to showcase contributions from across the Arab world, from Baghdad’s wisdom to the innovation in Dubai, affirming a narrative that belongs to many.

Key Themes for the Conference

At the heart of the conference are three pivotal themes: intangible heritage, new technologies, and youth engagement. These areas are increasingly crucial as institutions strive to connect with a diverse audience.

“Youth engagement is essential,” Sheikha Latifa stated, encouraging attendees to view the younger generation as partners in shaping the future of museums. “Intangible cultural heritage reminds us that culture encompasses what we carry, from language to customs.

Modern technologies, too, play a vital role. They have the potential to revolutionize how museums interact with their visitors, deepening our connections to history while inviting innovation.

Collaborative Advances in Technology

A significant announcement during the opening ceremony involved a memorandum of understanding signed by ICOM and UNESCO, which focuses on the responsible use of artificial intelligence in cultural institutions. Krista Pikkat, director at UNESCO, emphasized the importance of inclusivity in technological advancements: “We need to ensure we include everybody in the benefits and developments of AI.

Pikkat’s insights reveal a commitment to capacity building and training, ensuring a human-centered approach in employing new technologies. “AI must depict the world in all its diversity,” she advocated, reinforcing the notion that technology should enhance cultural understanding rather than hinder it.

As the conference unfolds, the discussions promise to shape the future of museums globally. With participants sharing insights on how these institutions can better serve their communities, ICOM Dubai 2025 sets a foundational course for collaboration and innovation in the museum sector.
