Major Traffic Upgrade on Umm Suqeim Street

Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has embarked on an impressive integrated urban project aimed at enhancing Umm Suqeim Street, specifically from its intersection with Jumeirah Street to Al Khail Road. The initiative was announced on Saturday, emphasizing the RTA’s commitment to modernizing the city’s infrastructure to meet the needs of its booming population and urban expansion.

Objectives of the Project

The primary objective of this project is to improve traffic flow across one of the city’s vital corridors. With urban growth at an all-time high, upgrading this key thoroughfare is necessary for the city’s continuous development. The project is also poised to significantly enrich the quality of life for both residents and visitors, providing a more efficient transportation system that seamlessly integrates with public transit options.

Comprehensive Traffic Solutions

One of the standout features of the project is its holistic approach to traffic management. It complements ongoing efforts to upgrade Umm Suqeim Street from Al Khail Road to Emirates Road. This comprehensive upgrade will eventually create an uninterrupted traffic flow from Jumeirah to Al Qudra Road, stretching across an impressive 20 kilometers.

Aesthetic and Functional Enhancements

Beyond just widening the roads, the project plans to incorporate creative and aesthetic improvements to the surrounding urban landscape. Key upgrades will include enhanced pedestrian walkways, dedicated cycling tracks, and complete streets that emphasize the importance of community spaces. These vibrant urban environments aim to foster community interaction, providing inclusive areas for both residents and visitors.

Seamless Connectivity to the Metro

In a world where public transport is increasingly essential, the project also aims to establish a direct link between the Mall of the Emirates Metro Station and surrounding residential communities. By integrating strategic improvements, the RTA ensures that residents can access public transport easily and efficiently, promoting a seamless travel experience within the city.

Broader Road Network Enhancements

The project forms part of a larger master plan devised by the RTA, which aims to enhance the road network in the vicinity. This includes plans for upgrades on Jumeirah Street, Al Wasl Street, and Al Safa Street, with specific details to be announced in the future. The overarching goal is to create a more interconnected and efficient transport system across various key corridors in Dubai.

Increasing Traffic Capacity

Mattar Al Tayer, Director General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of the RTA, highlighted that the project is designed to significantly improve traffic capacity. By increasing Umm Suqeim Street’s capacity to accommodate 16,000 vehicles per hour in both directions, the RTA aims to slash travel time between Jumeirah Street and Al Khail Road from 20 minutes to just six. This upgrade is essential for serving the vital residential and commercial areas of Dubai, affecting more than two million residents.

Key Intersection Developments

An important aspect of the project involves upgrading six crucial intersections along Umm Suqeim Street. These intersections are:

  1. Jumeirah Street
  2. Al Wasl Street
  3. Sheikh Zayed Road
  4. First Al Khail Street
  5. Al Asayel Street
  6. Al Khail Road

The scope of work includes the construction of four bridges and three tunnels, totaling a combined length of 4,100 meters.

Specific Intersection Features

At the intersection with Jumeirah Street, a two-lane tunnel in each direction will be built, along with a signalized surface junction. A second tunnel at the Al Wasl Street intersection will facilitate smoother traffic flow from Sheikh Zayed Road towards Jumeirah Street. Significant improvements will also be made at the intersection with Sheikh Zayed Road, where two bridges will be constructed to eliminate traffic overlap.

Phased Construction Status

Currently, RTA is in the midst of construction on a 4.6-kilometer section of Umm Suqeim Street, which spans from the intersection with Al Khail Road to Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road. This phase involves a major redevelopment at the Al Barsha South intersection, including an 800-meter tunnel accommodating four lanes in each direction. With over 70% of this work already completed, the anticipated opening is set for the third quarter of this year.
