Pope Leo XIV Dissolves the Pontifical Committee for World Children’s Day

By Salvatore Cernuzio

In a recent announcement on February 13, Pope Leo XIV has officially dissolved the Pontifical Committee for World Children’s Day, which was initially founded by Pope Francis in November 2024. This decision follows the Pope’s prior directive that placed the Committee under the Dicastery for Laity, Family, and Life last August, altering how the event would be managed.

A Shift in Organizational Structure

The Pontifical Committee was created with the goal of overseeing the pastoral organization and ecclesial engagement for World Children’s Day. This initiative was inspired by World Youth Day and aimed to unite thousands of children from around the globe in Rome for a celebration filled with music, faith, and personal stories.

Following the recent changes, the responsibility for the event’s organization and coordination now lies solely with the Dicastery for Laity, Family, and Life, which is led by Cardinal Kevin Farrell. According to a letter from Pope Leo, “The Dicastery for Laity, Family, and Life is responsible for all matters that were previously under the authority of the Pontifical Committee.” This shift is significant, as it marks a transition towards a more integrated approach within the Church’s administrative structure.

Continuation of the Celebration

Despite the dissolution of the Committee, preparations for World Children’s Day will carry on. The upcoming second edition is set to occur in Rome from September 25 to 27, 2026, a plan first announced by Pope Leo last November. The commitment to continue this event underscores its importance within the Church and the significance of fostering connections among young people worldwide.

Enhanced Synergies and Efficiency

Pope Leo XIV emphasized that the recent changes are aimed at “promoting synergies and more effective work” following the guidelines outlined in the rescript from August 2025. The intent is to streamline operations and enhance the impact of this meaningful initiative after comprehensive consultations.

In line with the dissolution, the founding chirograph and the associated statutes of the Pontifical Committee have been annulled. Furthermore, all prior regulations and acts enacted by the Committee are revoked, eliminating their legal standing both canonically and in civil law. Consequently, the president, vice president, and all other members of the Committee are to conclude their duties immediately.

Finalizing Administrative Matters

The Prefect of the Dicastery for Laity, Family, and Life has been tasked with addressing any unresolved issues stemming from the Committee’s operations. This includes drafting a final liquidation report to be submitted to the Secretariat for the Economy. This report will seek approval and make determinations regarding any remaining assets associated with the now-dissolved Committee.

The inaugural event of World Children’s Day took place on May 25, 2024, at the Olympic Stadium in Rome, attended by Pope Francis and engaging more than 50,000 children and youth, including participants from conflict-affected regions. This remarkable gathering showcased the Church’s commitment to youth and underscored the ongoing importance of initiatives that celebrate faith and community among younger generations.

As the Church moves forward, the expectation remains that the spirit of World Children’s Day will continue, fostering joy, hope, and a sense of belonging for children around the world.
