The Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers Association Gulf (PHRMAG) has announced a collaboration with the Authority of Social Contribution – Ma’an to enhance access to innovative cancer treatments in the UAE. This partnership aims to support eligible patients with oncology and rare diseases, ensuring they can access cutting-edge therapies within a structured framework aligned with the national health insurance system, as reported by Gulf Today.
As the UAE celebrates the Year of Family 2026, the significance of this initiative is underscored. The collaboration not only focuses on improving individual patient outcomes but also aims to strengthen family resilience and community cohesion during challenging health crises.
PHRMAG represents leading biopharmaceutical research companies in the Gulf, dedicated to developing medicines that enhance patient longevity and health. The Authority of Social Contribution – Ma’an serves as the Abu Dhabi Government’s official channel for social contributions, directing efforts towards key social priorities, including healthcare.
The partnership has received support from the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi, which emphasised its role in promoting accessible healthcare, innovation, and the early detection and treatment of rare diseases.
Addressing the Need for Access
Medical innovation is advancing rapidly, with new therapies and personalised care transforming treatment possibilities for patients, particularly those with previously limited options. However, access remains a critical barrier that must be overcome to translate scientific advancements into real-world benefits.
This is particularly vital for rare diseases, where patient populations may be small, yet the demand for timely diagnosis and specialised care is significant. The World Health Organization estimates that over 300 million people globally are affected by one of more than 7,000 rare diseases.
In oncology, the need for effective treatments is equally pressing. The International Agency for Research on Cancer reported approximately 20 million new cancer cases and 9.7 million cancer deaths worldwide in 2022. This stark reality highlights the urgent need for accessible treatment options.
The collaboration between PHRMAG and Ma’an aims to bridge the gap between medical innovation and patient access, ensuring that those in need can receive timely and effective treatments. This initiative represents a significant step towards improving healthcare outcomes in the UAE and beyond.
