Prosecutors drop three impeachment charges against Philippine Vice President Sara Duterte

Published:

Prosecutors in the Philippines have dropped three of the four impeachment charges against Vice President Sara Duterte, a significant development in her ongoing trial in the Senate over allegations of corruption and abuse of power. The Senate approved this decision on Tuesday, leaving only the charge of unexplained wealth for consideration.

Lead prosecutor Gerville Luistro informed the court that the prosecution decided to withdraw the charges related to the misuse of confidential funds, bribery, and threats against President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., the First Lady, and a former House Speaker. Luistro argued that focusing on a single charge would streamline the proceedings and benefit all parties involved, including the public.

Duterte’s legal team criticized the decision, claiming it was unfair as it limited their ability to defend against the withdrawn allegations. The prosecution has been presenting evidence since July, alleging that Duterte betrayed public trust, amassed unexplained wealth, and committed graft and bribery.

The Senate, acting as the court in this case, previously ruled that only senators participating in the trial would be counted in the vote, potentially easing the requirement for a two-thirds majority needed for a conviction. If found guilty, Duterte could face disqualification from holding public office, including a potential run for the presidency in 2028.

According to the relevant news source, the trial’s outcome could have significant implications for Duterte’s political future and the broader landscape of Philippine governance.
