National MS Society Strengthens Community Support Across UAE for World MS Day

Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates: The National Multiple Sclerosis Society (NMSS) is set to observe World MS Day across the UAE for the fourth consecutive year. This initiative aims to foster dialogue, enhance understanding, and promote visible support for individuals living with multiple sclerosis (MS) through a nationwide awareness campaign.

The campaign encompasses healthcare facilities, workplaces, and community spaces, integrating educational resources, public activations, and community-driven experiences. Its goal is to facilitate open discussions about MS and the realities faced by those living with the condition.

This year’s theme, “My MS Diagnosis: Navigating MS Together,” emphasizes the experiences surrounding an MS diagnosis. It highlights the necessity for accessible information, practical guidance, and robust support systems following a diagnosis.

Her Excellency Dr. Fatima Al Kaabi, Vice Chair of NMSS, stated that World MS Day serves as a reminder that living with MS is not a solitary journey. Instead, it is one shaped by the strength of communities, families, caregivers, and support systems. She expressed pride in continuing to build national awareness and collective understanding of the realities of living with MS.

Dr. Al Kaabi further noted that meaningful progress arises from collective action and shared responsibility. The NMSS campaign aims to unite healthcare institutions, community partners, and the public to enhance awareness, broaden access to practical resources, and cultivate a more inclusive and supportive environment for individuals living with MS across the UAE.

Practical Resources Supporting Life with MS

As part of the campaign, NMSS has introduced a series of practical resources tailored to support various stages of the MS journey. These resources aim to strengthen everyday support systems for individuals living with the condition.

One key resource is the Talking About Your MS Diagnosis Guide, designed to empower individuals in navigating conversations about their diagnosis with family, friends, and colleagues. This guide includes practical advice and exercises to foster open and confident communication.

Acknowledging the vital role of caregivers, NMSS has also developed a dedicated guide for Empowering Carers. This resource provides essential information and guidance for those supporting individuals living with MS and other chronic conditions.

Additionally, an HR Guide has been created to assist HR teams and employers in understanding MS better. This guide aims to promote inclusive and accommodating workplace environments for employees living with the condition. Endorsed by The Butterfly, an organization specializing in inclusion and accessibility solutions, it offers practical information on accessibility and workplace adjustments that can help employees with MS and other disabilities thrive professionally.

While primarily focused on MS, these resources are also applicable to conversations surrounding other chronic conditions.

Expanding Awareness Through Healthcare

The resources are part of a broader awareness initiative being implemented across more than 30 healthcare facilities and partner networks in the UAE. This effort aims to improve the visibility and accessibility of MS support resources within clinical settings and enhance understanding of the condition among wider communities.

To extend its educational outreach, NMSS will host an online webinar on June 5, 2026. This session will explore practical wellbeing strategies and ongoing research in the UAE aimed at supporting individuals living with MS and their families. Open to the public, the webinar will feature experts from nutrition, mental health, and research discussing the realities of living with MS and the importance of holistic support systems.

Bringing World MS Day into Community Spaces

Beyond healthcare and educational settings, the initiative will extend into community spaces through a café activation themed “Carry It Forward.” This event will take place across more than 30 participating locations in the UAE on May 30 and 31. The activation aims to raise awareness about multiple sclerosis and encourage open conversations and stronger community support for individuals living with the condition.

The campaign will also expand into public spaces through landmark illuminations across the UAE, aimed at enhancing visibility and awareness of MS. Through its nationwide World MS Day campaign, NMSS seeks to promote open discussions about MS and reinforce understanding of the realities faced by those living with the condition, reminding individuals with MS in the UAE that they are not alone in their journey.
