Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Launches 1 Billion Meals Dates Factory to Combat Global Hunger
His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister, and Ruler of Dubai, has announced the establishment of the 1 Billion Meals Dates Factory, which will have an annual production capacity of 150 million date-based food units. This initiative aims to provide essential support to underprivileged communities globally, reinforcing the UAE’s commitment to humanitarian efforts and its role as a global hub for relief action.
A Landmark Investment in Humanitarian Aid
The 1 Billion Meals Dates Factory is part of the Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Global Initiatives (MBRGI), which seeks to create a food safety net for populations facing food insecurity. This project aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for 2030, enhancing the UAE’s contribution to the global fight against hunger.
Sheikh Mohammed emphasized the significance of this factory, describing it as the world’s largest endowment-based dates factory. He stated that the initiative serves as a message of hope for those in need, highlighting the UAE’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding human dignity and ensuring food security for underprivileged communities.
Commitment to Sustainable Giving
The factory is designed to be a vital addition to the UAE’s portfolio of humanitarian initiatives. Sheikh Mohammed expressed confidence in the national workforce’s ability to deliver high-quality production and operational efficiency. He reiterated that philanthropy is a core aspect of the UAE’s identity, driven by a commitment to ongoing charitable efforts.
The announcement was attended by prominent figures, including H.H. Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, President of the Dubai Civil Aviation Authority, and H.H. Sheikh Mansoor bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Chairman of the UAE Olympic Committee, among others.
Addressing Global Food Insecurity
Mohammad Al Gergawi, Secretary General of MBRGI, stated that the factory embodies Sheikh Mohammed’s vision for sustainable giving and elevating humanitarian action. He noted that the project is designed to provide food aid to underprivileged populations worldwide, reinforcing the UAE’s role as a key player in combating global hunger.
Al Gergawi highlighted the urgency of the initiative, given the rising threat of malnutrition due to economic challenges and crises. He emphasized the need for collective efforts to establish a food safety net and provide access to high-quality nutritional products.
Funding and Operational Management
The 1 Billion Meals Dates Factory is funded by a generous AED 200 million donation from businessman Mirwais Azizi. Operations will be managed by Al Barakah Dates, which brings extensive industry expertise to the project, further solidifying its partnership with MBRGI.
Located in Margham, Dubai, the factory is set to become one of the UAE’s strategic projects aimed at enhancing humanitarian efforts and food security. It will focus on processing dates into innovative, sustainable products that offer nutritious meals to underserved populations.
Technological Advancements and Economic Impact
The initiative aims to integrate humanitarian action with economic development by establishing a state-of-the-art manufacturing ecosystem utilizing the latest food production technologies. This project will not only bolster the UAE’s position as a global food production hub but also create jobs, strengthen supply chains, and expand the reach of UAE food exports.
The factory will consist of a main facility along with dedicated operational and storage units, with completion expected by the end of 2027. Its output will focus on date-based products fortified with essential vitamins and minerals, maximizing nutritional value. The dates will be sourced exclusively from local farms, supporting the UAE’s palm cultivation sector and contributing to the nation’s green spaces.
