Arne Slot’s Anfield Exit Followed Fallout with Three Key Liverpool Players

Arne Slot’s tenure as head coach of Liverpool concluded last month following a disappointing second season. His departure was largely attributed to the team’s lackluster performance, particularly after they had secured the Premier League title in his inaugural year.

Discontent at Anfield

Slot’s time at Liverpool was marred by growing tensions with several senior players. The club’s new manager, Andoni Iraola, is now tasked with mending the fractured relationships within the squad and re-establishing a connection with the supporters, who expressed their discontent through boos during Slot’s final matches.

Iraola’s immediate focus will be on fostering a positive environment within the dressing room. Key players such as Mohamed Salah, Trent Alexander-Arnold, and Darwin Nunez had strained interactions with Slot, which contributed to the overall atmosphere at Anfield.

Mohamed Salah’s Frustration

One of the most notable conflicts during Slot’s reign involved Mohamed Salah. The Egyptian forward publicly expressed his frustration after being benched for three consecutive matches in December 2025. Salah felt scapegoated for the team’s poor performances and claimed that his relationship with Slot had deteriorated significantly.

Following a match against Leeds, Salah voiced his disappointment, stating, “I can’t believe I’m sitting on the bench for 90 minutes… It seems like the club has thrown me under the bus.” He further remarked that he felt someone was attempting to shift the blame onto him, despite previously having a good rapport with the manager.

In the wake of Liverpool’s 4-2 defeat to Aston Villa in May, Salah took to social media to criticize the team’s standards, emphasizing the need for Liverpool to return to their attacking roots and regain their identity as a trophy-winning team.

Trent Alexander-Arnold’s Discontent

Trent Alexander-Arnold also experienced friction with Slot. The academy graduate departed Liverpool for Real Madrid last summer, but their relationship had soured during Slot’s early tenure. A notable incident occurred during a match against Brentford in 2024 when Alexander-Arnold was substituted with 18 minutes remaining while the team held a 2-0 lead.

Slot acknowledged Alexander-Arnold’s dissatisfaction after the match, stating, “Every player wants to play 90 minutes, but we have to take care of him for the whole season.” This incident highlighted Slot’s willingness to assert his authority as a new manager, even at the expense of player morale.

Darwin Nunez’s Struggles

Darwin Nunez faced criticism from Slot for his work ethic during a period when Liverpool was competing for the Premier League title. Nunez’s performances were deemed lackluster, particularly in a match against Aston Villa in February 2025.

Slot remarked, “I can accept every miss… but what is harder for me to accept is his behaviour after the chance.” He emphasized the importance of maintaining a strong work rate, regardless of missed opportunities. Nunez’s response to criticism included a social media post expressing his frustration, which he later deleted. He stated, “If I fall, I get up. You will never see me lower my arms.”

Despite his efforts to clarify his commitment to the club, Nunez’s time at Liverpool ended when he transferred to Saudi Pro League club Al-Hilal in August 2025.

The fallout from Slot’s departure underscores the challenges faced by managers in maintaining harmony within a squad, particularly when results do not meet expectations. As Liverpool moves forward under Iraola, rebuilding relationships and restoring the club’s competitive edge will be crucial.
