Iran’s President Apologizes for Strikes on Neighbors Amid Ongoing Missile and Drone Attacks
DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — In a significant escalation of regional tensions, Lebanon’s militant group Hezbollah issued an urgent evacuation warning on Saturday for residents of the northern Israeli towns of Kiryat Shmona and Nahariya. This warning followed Israel’s military directive for evacuations in large areas of southern Lebanon and the southern suburbs of Beirut, prompting tens of thousands to flee their homes amid intense airstrikes.
Shortly after Hezbollah’s announcement, alert sirens were activated in Nahariya, Kiryat Shmona, and Tiberias, indicating an immediate threat. The situation escalated dramatically as the Israeli military conducted airstrikes in response to ongoing clashes in the region.
Casualties from Airstrikes
According to Lebanon’s Health Ministry, Israeli airstrikes on the eastern town of Nabi Chit and surrounding areas resulted in 41 fatalities and 40 injuries. These strikes followed a night of fierce clashes after an Israeli force landed in the area, engaging with local gunmen. Among the deceased were three members of the Lebanese army.
The Israeli military was reportedly searching for information regarding Israeli navigator Ron Arad, who has been missing since his fighter jet crashed in Lebanon 40 years ago. However, the military confirmed that no remains were found during this operation.
Iranian Leadership’s Apology
Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian issued an apology on Saturday for the attacks on neighboring countries, despite ongoing missile and drone strikes targeting Gulf Arab states. This statement highlighted the apparent disconnect between Iran’s political leadership and its military operations, suggesting a lack of control over the armed forces. Pezeshkian also rejected U.S. President Donald Trump’s demands for Iran’s unconditional surrender.
Pezeshkian’s remarks came exactly one week after the onset of a conflict that has spread throughout the region, severely impacting global markets and air travel. The Iranian leadership has faced significant challenges due to numerous Israeli and American airstrikes.
Internal Confusion in Iran
In his statement, Pezeshkian expressed regret for the attacks on neighboring nations, emphasizing the need for diplomacy. He stated, “I should apologize to the neighboring countries that were attacked by Iran, on my own behalf. From now on, they should not attack neighboring countries or fire missiles at them, unless we are attacked by those countries.”
However, General Abolfazl Shekarchi, spokesman for Iran’s armed forces, added to the confusion by asserting that Iran had not targeted countries that did not provide support for U.S. military actions against Iran.
In light of the ongoing political turmoil, Ayatollah Nasser Makarem Shirazi urged Iran’s Assembly of Experts to expedite the selection of a new supreme leader, following the death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei during a recent airstrike.
Intensifying Military Actions
The conflict shows no signs of abating, with the Trump administration approving a new $151 million arms sale to Israel. U.S. officials have warned of an impending bombing campaign that could be the most intense yet in this week-long conflict. Iran’s U.N. ambassador stated that the country would take all necessary measures to defend itself.
Recent reports indicated that explosions were visible over western Tehran as Israel initiated a broad wave of strikes. The ongoing military actions have resulted in at least 1,230 deaths in Iran, over 200 in Lebanon, and 11 in Israel, according to official sources.
Regional Implications of the Conflict
As the conflict expands, sirens were activated in Bahrain due to Iranian missile attacks. Saudi Arabia reported intercepting drones aimed at its Shaybah oil field and shooting down a ballistic missile directed at Prince Sultan Air Base, which hosts U.S. forces. In Dubai, several explosions were reported, prompting the activation of air defenses and causing disruptions at Dubai International Airport.
The airline Emirates initially suspended all flights to and from Dubai but later announced the resumption of operations.
Iranian Naval Presence in India
In a related development, India’s Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar confirmed that an Iranian naval vessel, the IRIS Lavan, docked in Kochi after reporting mechanical issues. This vessel had participated in naval exercises hosted by India prior to the outbreak of hostilities.
Jaishankar described the decision to allow the ship to dock as a humane action, emphasizing the need for compassion amid the ongoing conflict.
Economic Concerns Amidst Warfare
Qatar’s Energy Minister Saad al-Kaabi warned that the ongoing war could destabilize global economies, predicting a potential shutdown of Gulf energy exports that could drive oil prices to $150 per barrel. The price of U.S. crude oil recently surpassed $90, marking a significant increase.
Analysts have suggested that Iran’s actions may represent a strategic miscalculation, potentially transforming the conflict into a broader confrontation between Iran and its Arab neighbors.
Clashes in Eastern Lebanon
Hezbollah reported clashes with an Israeli force that landed in eastern Lebanon late Friday. Following these confrontations, the Lebanese Health Ministry reported at least 16 deaths and 35 injuries from subsequent Israeli airstrikes. Israel has conducted multiple airstrikes in the southern suburbs of Beirut, where Hezbollah maintains a significant presence.
Lebanon’s Health Ministry has indicated that over 200 individuals have died from Israeli strikes since the beginning of the week, with more than 800 reported injuries.
