UAE’s Ambitious Vision for the Space Sector

Sheikh Hamdan Leads Strategic Initiatives

His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of the Supreme Space Council, recently led the Council’s second meeting, focusing on a revamped strategy for the UAE’s space sector. This meeting highlighted a focused approach built around three critical goals: to establish the UAE as a key player in investment-friendly space ecosystems, position the country as a leader in international space partnerships, and ensure that its space infrastructure meets the highest global standards.

Insights from the Space Economic Survey

During the meeting, Sheikh Hamdan reviewed findings from the Space Economic Survey, which tracked the growth of the space sector over the past five years. He also announced the launch of the National Space Industries Program, aimed at enhancing competitiveness within the sector.

Sheikh Hamdan emphasized the importance of the space sector in developing a knowledge-based economy, describing it as vital for innovation and technology development that can tackle global challenges. He pointed out that investment in space technology is crucial for the UAE to strengthen its competitive edge both regionally and internationally, enabling the country to meet the rising demand for advanced space technologies.

Setting Ambitious Targets

The Crown Prince reaffirmed the UAE’s commitment to building an advanced space ecosystem, aiming to elevate the nation’s position as a global leader in this field. “We aim to increase the value added by the space economy by 60% and double its overall returns,” he stated, expressing the goal of placing the United Arab Emirates among the top ten space economies by 2031.

Sheikh Hamdan underscored the need to enhance national capabilities, aiming to double investments in space infrastructure and the number of local companies engaged in the space industry. His vision is for the UAE to become a hub for advanced technology and an integrated national space industry that prioritizes innovation and national objectives.

Key Findings of the Space Economic Survey

The Space Economic Survey revealed significant growth patterns: there has been a 49% rise in total spending on space from both public and private sectors over the past five years, showcasing a unified commitment to building a sustainable ecosystem. Notably, investment in space research and development has seen a ninefold increase since 2019, indicating the UAE’s strong focus on scientific leadership.

The survey also highlighted a positive trend in gender inclusion, noting a 51% increase in female Emiratis working within the space sector compared to last year. This growth signifies both the maturing environment in the UAE and the pivotal role women are playing in shaping the future of the industry.

Launching the National Space Industries Program

The recent meeting marked the formal initiation of the National Space Industries Program, which is integral for enhancing the space sector’s competitiveness. This program encompasses a range of initiatives, including policies designed to attract investment and stimulate growth among both emerging and established companies.

Particularly, the program seeks to improve access to both local and international markets, providing opportunities for national companies to engage in commercial contracts and leverage UAE’s state-of-the-art space facilities. Furthermore, it places emphasis on knowledge transfer and technology sharing among public and private sectors, aiming to double the number of companies in the space industry and boost the UAE’s space exports within the next five years.

Strategic Reviews

The meeting also reviewed outcomes from the recent Space Retreat, which took place in October and was attended by various ministers, along with over 100 leaders and representatives from both national and international companies. Among those present were Dr. Ahmad Belhoul Al Falasi, the Minister of Sports and Secretary-General of the Supreme Space Council; Abdullah bin Touq Al Marri, the Minister of Economy; and Omar bin Sultan Al Olama, the Minister of State for Artificial Intelligence.

This broad gathering underlined the UAE’s commitment to not only advancing its space initiatives but also fostering collaboration across various sectors and institutions, aligning with the broader national agenda for economic diversification and innovation.
