From Nyeri to Dubai: The Inspiring Journey of DJ Riqq
A Humble Beginning
Born and raised in Nyeri, Kenya, DJ Riqq emerged from a modest background filled with love and support from his family. Growing up in a household where his parents prioritized education and nurtured his interests, he reflects on his formative years with gratitude. “They did everything it took to ensure I had what I needed to be ready for life,” he shares. Despite the comforts of home, however, a driving force pulled him toward a different destiny—music.
The Love for Music
From a young age, music was not just an interest for Riqq; it was a passion that consumed him. He recalls being glued to the radio, absorbing melodies, rhythms, and lyrics. “Singing never felt right for me,” he admits, revealing that public performances filled him with dread. Instead, he found solace and expression in the art of deejaying—a path that would eventually define his career.
Discovering the Craft
As he transitioned into university life, Riqq began to experiment with turntables alongside juggling multiple jobs in sales and hospitality. Although his day jobs provided financial stability, they didn’t ignite his spirit. “Deejaying offered energy, expression, and engagement,” he explains. The pivotal moment in his nascent career occurred in 2013 when he clinched a victory at a regional DJ competition, marking the beginning of his rise in the entertainment scene.
Breakthrough and Global Recognition
Fast forward to September 2025, and Riqq’s career reached new heights as he earned the runner-up position at the prestigious DMC Champion M.EST contest. “I knew I was on the right path when I realized I could earn five times my salary from something I’d loved since childhood,” he reflects, illustrating the transformative power of following one’s passion. His success fueled his ambition to reach broader audiences.
A Leap of Faith to Dubai
Motivated by a desire for growth and opportunities, Riqq made a significant life decision: he resigned from his sales job at an Apple iPhone shop and relocated to Dubai. This courageous step coincided with the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, a period that could have easily derailed his plans. Instead, it became an opportunity to reinvent himself in a new market, known for its diverse genres and competitive landscape.
Navigating Challenges
In Dubai, DJ Riqq faced the reality of being judged purely on his skills. He notes that the UAE market was larger and provided better pay, but challenges lurked around every corner. “There were stereotypes and cultural barriers that I had to embrace and navigate,” he admits. He strategically carved out a niche for himself, blending various musical genres from Latin to UK and US hits, a departure from the more traditional Kenyan sound.
An Evolving Artistic Identity
DJ Riqq’s unique open-format style has become his trademark. By mixing and blending various genres spontaneously, he keeps his performances fresh and engaging. “That way, my sets are always different, and it pushes me to learn more music,” he outlines, showcasing his commitment to continuous growth as an artist. This adaptability has not only enriched his sets but has also broadened his audience reach.
Embracing Technology and Social Media
In a digital age, Riqq understands the importance of technology and social media in building his brand. He considers his Instagram profile a vital part of his professional identity, using it as an interactive digital CV to attract potential clients. “It’s essential to showcase what I can do and stay relevant,” he says, underscoring the dynamics of the modern entertainment industry.
Overcoming Setbacks
Like any journey, Riqq’s path has been fraught with challenges. One particularly painful experience was betrayal by fellow Kenyans who exploited his creative ideas for personal gain. “It hurt, but I overcame it by working with new communities and lowering my expectations,” he shares, highlighting his resilience and ability to adapt amidst adversity.
Finding Balance
Balancing the nightlife as a DJ with a personal life poses its own set of hurdles. “That’s the ultimate curse of DJs,” Riqq admits, recognizing that his friends and family often live on opposite schedules. Despite this challenge, he makes it a point to reconnect with Kenya’s entertainment scene whenever he returns home, staying updated on emerging music and trends.
The Multifaceted Artist
Away from the decks, DJ Riqq’s creativity extends into graphic design and video editing. He currently serves as the Creative Director for The Guestroom Podcast by DJ Lowkey, an American platform that highlights both emerging and established DJs globally. This role not only allows him to tap into other talents but also connects him with a network of top international DJs. “It’s a great way to connect and learn directly from others,” he enthusiastically remarks, showcasing his drive for continuous development.
DJ Riqq’s journey from the streets of Nyeri to the bustling nightlife of Dubai exemplifies how passion, resilience, and adaptability can lead to a fulfilling and dynamic career in music. As he continues to evolve as an artist, there’s no doubt that his story will inspire many aspiring DJs around the world.
