Florida A&M University’s Recent Rankings: A Closer Look

As the new academic year kicks off, Florida A&M University (FAMU) is bustling with activity. Ranking Changes in U.S. News & World Report
This year, FAMU experienced a notable shift in the U.S. News & World Report rankings, dropping to No. 92 among national public universities, down from No. 81 last year. This decline is seen as a setback, particularly after a strong showing in recent years, which included an upward surge of ten spots in 2023. However, FAMU still proudly holds the title of the top-ranked public historically Black college and university (HBCU) for the seventh consecutive year.
FAMU’s current ranking ties it with several other respected institutions, including Louisiana State University and the University of Alabama. Despite falling to fifth place among all HBCUs—including both public and private—FAMU remains a beacon of excellence in higher education, reinforcing its commitment to diversifying educational opportunities and supporting students from various socioeconomic backgrounds.
Graduation Rates and Social Mobility
A silver lining in these rankings is that FAMU’s graduation rate has risen to 41%, reflecting a 6% increase from the previous year. Although the university slipped to No. 22 on the Social Mobility Index, these moves highlight an ongoing dedication to uplifting students’ economic status through education.
While FAMU acknowledges the slight decrease in the percentage of students receiving Pell Grants—now at 56.6%—the institution remains among Florida’s top contenders for social mobility, underscoring its focus on helping disadvantaged students achieve success in higher education.
Provost Allyson Watson emphasized FAMU’s mission of expanding access, strengthening academic programs, and driving student success. “These rankings affirm that FAMU is preparing graduates not only to achieve social mobility but to lead at the highest levels and solve the challenges of the future as we advance toward R1 status,” she remarked.
Niche Rankings and Student Experience
While U.S. News & World Report garners significant attention, it’s essential to note FAMU’s standout performance in Niche’s rankings, where it earned the title of No. 1 HBCU in America. This recognition, based on student reviews, is viewed as a testament to the university’s commitment to delivering a high-quality educational experience.
FAMU ranked highly in various categories within Niche, including second place for Best Greek Life Colleges in Florida and 11th place for Best Colleges for Criminal Justice. These accolades not only enhance the university’s reputation but also reflect its diverse student engagement and vibrant campus culture.
