Etihad Rail and AD Ports Group have announced the launch of a new direct rail service that connects Fujairah Terminals with the Industrial City of Abu Dhabi (ICAD). This initiative aims to enhance the logistics capabilities of the UAE by linking one of the country’s key East Coast maritime gateways with major industrial zones in Abu Dhabi, according to a statement from the companies.
The new service allows cargo arriving at Fujairah to be transported directly by rail over a distance of 200 km to ICAD, where customers can access customs clearance, inspection, and cargo release services. This development is significant as it designates ICAD with its own UN Locode AECAD, establishing it as a recognised international logistics location within global shipping and trade systems. For the first time, shipping lines, freight forwarders, and cargo owners can book cargo directly to ICAD as the destination and clearance point, as reported by ME Construction News.
The integrated service combines a dedicated rail freight operation with customs-enabled inland cargo handling, simplifying customs processes and reducing handling requirements. This streamlined approach accelerates the movement of goods across Abu Dhabi, benefiting importers, exporters, manufacturers, distributors, and logistics providers.
Omar Alsebeyi, CEO of Etihad Rail Freight, highlighted that this new rail service represents a crucial step in unlocking the potential of the UAE National Rail Network. He noted that the partnership with AD Ports Group has resulted in an innovative logistics solution that enhances efficiency by bringing key port services closer to where cargo is ultimately needed.
The service operates three times a week, providing reliable schedules and reducing road congestion. It also offers enhanced scalability for high-volume cargo movements and lower carbon emissions compared to traditional long-haul trucking. This initiative strengthens multimodal cargo flows across the corridor, further integrating the logistics network.
Saif Al Mazrouei, CEO of AD Ports Group, emphasised the importance of connecting trade corridors with industrial and commercial ecosystems. He stated that the integrated service enhances connectivity across the trade ecosystem, supports long-term growth, and reinforces Abu Dhabi’s position as a preferred gateway for trade and industry.
The launch of this rail service underscores the commitment of both Etihad Rail and AD Ports Group to bolster the UAE’s logistics and trade infrastructure, fostering innovation and delivering customer-centric supply chain solutions. The partnership aims to create a more efficient and resilient logistics ecosystem, catering to businesses operating across the nation.
