In a dazzling celebration of Indian culture, classical art, and feminine strength, Nari Shakti—meaning “Power of Women”—took center stage in Dubai, leaving over 1,500 attendees deeply moved. This landmark event, conceived and executed entirely by women, featured more than 100 Indian classical dancers from across the UAE, showcasing a total of 15 captivating performances. The climax was the breathtaking Bharatanatyam production Agni Kanye, which left audiences in awe.
The mastermind behind this electrifying event is Guru Iswarya Bharadwaj, a visionary choreographer and cultural ambassador. As the founder of both the NANDA Performing Arts Centre and the Gulf Indian Performing Arts & Music Society (GIPAMS), she embodies the spirit of artistic excellence and community empowerment. Through her leadership, the event showcased the UAE’s dedication to nurturing artistic talent and promoting gender equality.
One of the highlights of the evening was the production Agni Kanye, which explored the life and emotional journey of Draupadi—a character from the Indian epic Mahabharata and a symbol of resilience, dignity, and divine strength. This production featured performers ranging in age from 5 to 50, which beautifully illustrated the concept of intergenerational collaboration. The performance demonstrated the unifying power of the arts, with participants coming together to honor a character that resonates deeply within Indian culture.
This grand showcase was not just a platform for artistic expression; it was also a testament to grassroots creativity. Supported by the Indian People’s Forum (IPF) and various local organizations and brands, the event featured handmade props, original costumes, and an all-women-led planning and execution team. Additionally, the evening was enriched by inclusive exhibits from people of determination and women creators, further highlighting the event’s commitment to inclusivity and empowerment.
As a part of this empowering celebration, the title of Nari Shakti was conferred upon three inspiring women who have made significant contributions to the arts:
Karthika Vaidyanathan, a Filmfare award-winning Carnatic singer, known for her powerful voice and dedication to classical music.
Puja Unni, an accomplished classical dancer, recognized for her grace and skill across various dance forms.
Renuka Parameshwar, a dedicated Carnatic music teacher, who has been instrumental in nurturing the next generation of musicians.
“Nari Shakti is more than a show; it’s a movement,” said Iswarya Bharadwaj. “I envision launching corporate wellness programs driven by the arts, counseling aspiring artists, and performing for the Rulers of the UAE to honor their inclusive vision and unwavering support for culture and women.” This ambitious vision illustrates the event’s deeper mission of furthering not just the arts, but also the role of women within the UAE’s cultural landscape.
Iswarya Bharadwaj’s own journey from a humble upbringing in the UAE to becoming a celebrated global performer is a stunning narrative that mirrors the Emirates’ inclusive and aspirational ethos. Having performed on over 500 global stages, including prestigious locations like the UK Parliament and Expo 2020 Dubai, Iswarya embodies the spirit of cultural diplomacy and artistic passion.
