Emirates and flydubai Join Forces with Dubai Finance to Propel Digital Payment Revolution
In a significant stride towards cementing Dubai’s position as a global leader in digital economy innovation, Emirates and flydubai have signed two Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with Dubai Finance (DOF). These agreements aim to advance digital payment initiatives and actively promote the ‘Dubai Cashless Strategy’ among the millions of international tourists visiting the emirate. With Dubai expecting over 18.7 million tourists in 2024, there lies an immense opportunity to convert cash-dependent visitors into digital payment adopters, thereby driving economic and technological progress.
The MoUs were signed in a high-profile ceremony featuring key figures such as Adnan Kazim, Emirates’ Deputy President and Chief Commercial Officer, Hamad Obaidalla, flydubai’s Chief Commercial Officer, and Ahmad Ali Meftah, Executive Director of the Central Accounts Sector at DOF. The occasion was further dignified by the presence of His Highness Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Chairman and Chief Executive of Emirates Airline & Group, alongside His Excellency Abdulrahman Saleh Al Saleh, Director General of DOF, among other senior executives from both airlines.
Adnan Kazim expressed the strategic importance of this partnership, highlighting how the collaboration with DOF presents a unique chance to rapidly increase digital payment adoption throughout Dubai’s tourism sector. He emphasized the synergy between expertise and infrastructure in supporting Dubai’s cashless vision and the broader D33 Agenda’s ambition of making tourism digitally seamless. With Emirates’ extensive global network, the airline is poised to champion Dubai’s cashless ecosystem worldwide, encouraging travelers to embrace secure digital payment solutions right from ticket booking. This pioneering move aims to set a blueprint for other leading cities globally.
On the same note, Hamad Obaidalla shared flydubai’s commitment to enhancing the travel experience through digital-first payment solutions. He underlined the role of this partnership in simplifying, securing, and expanding access to cashless payments, which aligns perfectly with Dubai’s vision of becoming a hub for digital innovation and economic growth. The goal is to make cashless payments not just convenient but a natural part of the visitor journey in Dubai.
From the perspective of Dubai Finance, Ahmad Ali Muftah remarked on the importance of this collaboration as a cornerstone of the Dubai Cashless Strategy. By expanding digital payment channels among tourists, the partnership reinforces Dubai’s image as a digital tourism hotspot and an innovation-driven economy. The initiative supports the shift toward a cashless society, increasing transactional efficiency and financial sustainability. This collaboration is anticipated to unlock new avenues for advanced financial technologies, fueling Dubai’s sustainable economic expansion.
Supporting this vision, Amna Mohamed Lootah, Director of Digital Payments Regulation Division at DOF, highlighted the airlines’ crucial role in driving transformative change within Dubai’s travel industry. The partnership fosters innovative financial solutions, improves smart tourism experiences, and promotes a secure and sustainable financial ecosystem that benefits both locals and visitors alike. The collective effort reaffirms DOF’s dedication to maintaining a seamless and secure financial environment, essential for Dubai’s long-term economic ambitions.
Leveraging existing ties with government departments, Emirates and flydubai bring in substantial digital payment capabilities, evidenced by Emirates’ offering of 14 payment gateways and the fully digital Skywards loyalty program. Both MoUs focus on sharing expertise, technical knowledge, and best practices for implementing cashless solutions within tourism, including workshops, training, and trend analyses to inform strategic planning.
A key target of this collaboration is enhancing the digital payment journey for tourists planning their visit to Dubai. This involves creating more inclusive and accessible payment options, running awareness campaigns, and exploring incentives to encourage the switch to digital payments. Efforts include introducing diverse solutions, such as contactless payments, that cater specifically to the needs of international travelers.
Launched just last year, the Dubai Cashless Strategy aims to achieve an ambitious goal of 90% cashless transactions across both government and private sectors by the end of 2026. This forward-thinking initiative is expected to contribute more than AED 8 billion to the economy annually through fintech enhancements. As part of the broader D33 Economic Agenda, the strategy focuses on seamless, secure digital payment experiences that foster innovation and competitive growth across all sectors, with a special emphasis on tourism and hospitality.
This set of collaborations between Emirates, flydubai, and Dubai Finance signals a transformative chapter in Dubai’s journey towards a fully integrated digital economy, promising a future where digital payments become an effortless and preferred mode of transaction for millions of visitors every year.
