Dubai Unveils CLIO: A 10-Kilometre Immersive Art Installation Set to Transform Cultural Landscape
CLIO, a groundbreaking 10-kilometre immersive art installation, was officially unveiled on January 10 in Dubai. This monumental project is poised to become one of the largest artworks globally and a new cultural icon for the UAE and the surrounding region. The launch event took place at L’Amo Bistro del Mare, located within the Dubai Harbour Yacht Club, and featured notable sports figures such as Roberto Baggio, David Trezeguet, Fabio Cannavaro, and Francesco Totti. The gathering also included various artists, actors, and ambassadors, including Stefano Cecchi and Diego Granese. Situated on over one million square metres at the VGPX+66 Margham Dubai – Dubai Desert SkyDive location, CLIO Desert Park aims to offer millions of visitors a curated journey through humanity’s shared narrative.
Concept and Design
The installation, conceived by international contemporary artist Agron Hoti, is composed of 25,000 authenticated 2 m x 2 m modules, each representing a chapter in a comprehensive narrative of inclusion, memory, and collective authorship. Central to the experience is Clio House, an architecturally unique cultural space designed for exhibitions, talks, residencies, and collaborations. This venue aims to gather creators, thinkers, and communities from the UAE and beyond. Over the next six years, CLIO expects to attract nearly five million visitors, including one million certifying participants, further solidifying Dubai’s status as a global hub for large-scale immersive art and culture.
Vision for Cultural Engagement
Massimiliano Suglia, CEO and Founder of CLIO Desert Park, stated that CLIO is intended as a living dialogue between art, land, and people, establishing a cultural landmark that belongs to everyone. He emphasized that the project aims to welcome 4.8 million visitors over six years and set a new standard for immersive public art. The installation will be developed on land owned by Shamal Holding, a Dubai-based diversified investment firm. Mohammad Javad, Executive Vice President of Leisure & Entertainment at Shamal, expressed excitement about hosting the CLIO Canvas at their Skydive Dubai Desert Campus.
Artistic and Cultural Integration
The Skydive Dubai desert dropzone is described as an active landscape shaped by energy, scale, and perspective, aligning perfectly with the ethos of CLIO. The installation is designed to foster a powerful dialogue between athleticism and creativity, allowing visitors to engage with art in a dynamic manner, akin to the experience of sport. The 10-kilometre linear installation, with a planned width of 10 metres, spans over one million square metres and serves as a flagship for Dubai’s creative economy.
Over the six-year programme, CLIO will feature rotating global exhibitions and commissions, produce a documentary in collaboration with Dubai Film that chronicles the project’s development, and invite public participation through Clio’s Hands, an ongoing collective artwork that encourages contributions from visitors worldwide. Clio House will function year-round as a hub for cultural exchange, brand collaborations, and thought leadership, with partnerships planned across luxury, design, and technology sectors.
Visitor Experience and Accessibility
The immersive experience is designed for accessibility, featuring off-road buggy art safaris that trace the installation’s line. Interactive screen walls will showcase ‘The Making of CLIO’ and the stories behind each module. Ceremonial programming will draw inspiration from Emirati hospitality, incorporating dates, gahwa, and storytelling at the heart of the spiral. A ‘Shoot the Arrow for Peace’ experience will provide a moment of symbolism and unity for participants. To facilitate smooth arrivals for visitors, partners, and VIP delegations, dedicated on-site parking for approximately 400–450 vehicles will be available.
The project is progressing according to a defined timeline, with the launch and investment phase having commenced in Q3 2025. Construction is set to begin in 2026, with the opening of CLIO Oasis targeted for 2027 and full project completion anticipated by 2033.
Collaboration and Artistic Background
XDubai, a prominent lifestyle and action sports brand in Dubai, is supporting the project through digital communication and video content. Skydive Dubai, known as one of the world’s most iconic skydiving destinations, has partnered with CLIO to develop experiential packages that allow visitors to experience the installation from aerial perspectives over the desert landscape.
Agron Hoti, the artist behind CLIO, is recognized for his large-scale abstract works exhibited in cities such as New York, Paris, Milan, Shanghai, and Tel Aviv. Born in 1970 in Mamurras, Albania, Hoti employs various techniques, often using his bare hands and improvised tools to create his art. His work has been described as a “narrative gesture that goes beyond the surface, to touch the myth.” Architect Matteo Antonelli is noted for his poetic use of light and materials that create connections between space and people. The conservation efforts for the project are led by Italian restorer Cinzia Pasquali, known for her work on Leonardo da Vinci’s Saint Anne, the Virgin and Child at the Musée du Louvre.
Massimiliano Suglia leads the executive team, bridging the realms of sport, culture, and business. CLIO is envisioned as a landmark cultural project that transforms the desert into a living canvas. Developed by Clio Oasis Project Management Services LLC, the initiative integrates art, architecture, technology, and community engagement, aiming to captivate local, regional, and global audiences. The project is located at VGPX+66 Margham Dubai – Dubai Desert SkyDive.
