Two WhatsApp groups, initiated by Dr. Deepti Arora—a Human Resources manager—became the backbone of the relief effort. Dr. Deepti shared her inspiration for launching the groups came when she received a call from a distressed employee, a young Brazilian man living in the tower. “I tried to take the tram to check on him, but it wasn’t working. So, I followed the smoke and walked to the building,” she recalled, describing what she saw as gut-wrenching. Realizing the urgency, she established a ruleset within the group, prohibiting cash donations and focusing solely on essentials.
Within hours, membership in the group surpassed a thousand, necessitating the creation of an additional group to manage the overwhelming response. Members actively coordinated meal deliveries, ensuring that displaced residents had access to nutritious food. Sevgi Anar, a Sydney-born health and fitness professional residing on the 72nd floor of a nearby tower, also stepped into action. She, along with others, was among the first to notice the fire. “People in our building were shouting across to the tower, trying to alert residents,” she recounted. The next morning, while walking her dog, she found two men sleeping near a tram station, their feet covered in soot. Upon learning they had escaped the fire, Sevgi arranged emergency accommodation for them.
Sevgi established another WhatsApp group, titled "Accommodation for Tiger Tower Residents," focused exclusively on finding temporary housing for those displaced. “We found several boys who were roughing it out near Princess Tower and managed to secure apartments for them,” she mentioned, highlighting the grassroots initiative that brought people together.
Temporary Housing and Continued Needs
While the building’s management offered temporary accommodation to residents holding tenancy or ownership contracts, those in shared flats faced significant difficulties. An Indian resident shared his experience: “I was told to go to Nobles Tower, but by the time I reached, it was full.” Currently, he is sheltered at Staybridge Suites in Dubai Internet City, supported by his employer.
Another account from Ross, an Azerbaijani expat on the 60th floor, echoed the sense of urgency. He attempted to douse the flames initially, but soon realized the situation was beyond control. He was injured when a balcony door shattered from the heat but was grateful for the swift arrival and professionalism of emergency services.
A Web of Help: Businesses and Residents Join Hands
The network of assistance extended far beyond shelter and food. Individuals offered their properties temporarily, showcasing unwavering kindness. One family in urgent need of housing quickly received an offer of a vacant villa in Dubai Hills, demonstrating how swiftly help could be mobilized.
Local businesses also stepped in to provide services for those affected by the tragedy. For instance, Clever Dogs Pets Care in Jebel Ali temporarily accommodated displaced pets, while Sisters Beauty Lounge offered complimentary services to women from the building, further affirming the community bonds formed in times of crisis.
