Breakthroughs in Genetic Medicine: A Decade to Cure Diseases
DUBAI, United Arab Emirates—At the Dubai Future Forum 2025, advancements in gene editing were highlighted as a promising solution for eradicating known genetic diseases within the next ten years. Dr. Trevor Martin, CEO and Co-founder of Mammoth Biosciences, shared insights about his company’s groundbreaking research that aims to introduce “a one-time cure” poised to transform the healthcare landscape significantly.
The Future of Cognitive Potential
Opening the discourse at the forum, Khalfan Belhoul, CEO of the Dubai Future Foundation, introduced the term “national cognitive potential.” He emphasized how countries could foster a competitive edge in emerging fields like artificial intelligence by harnessing the collective intellectual capabilities of their populations.
Astrophysics and the Search for Extraterrestrial Life
In another key session, Dr. Nikku Madhusudhan from the University of Cambridge presented compelling arguments about the likelihood of discovering extraterrestrial life within the next decade. He explained that scientists are increasingly detecting carbon-based molecules on distant exoplanets. “In my view, it’s not a question of if we will find life, but rather whether we are equipped to recognize life that defies our current understanding,” he stated.
AI Takes a Step Forward in Commerce
Prior to the forum commenced, Mastercard’s CEO, Michael Miebach, confirmed a significant advancement in artificial intelligence. In partnership with Majid Al-Futtaim, they successfully executed the first commerce transaction in Dubai entirely facilitated by an AI agent, marking a pioneering step in digital transactions.
Generative AI in Education
One noteworthy presentation was delivered by Beatrice Wilson, a UNICEF Youth Foresight Fellowship fellow from Ghana. She discussed her research indicating that many young students now prefer utilizing generative AI platforms for academic assistance over directly approaching teachers. This shift appears to stem from concerns about judgment and potential criticism in traditional learning environments.
Insights and Predictions for Humanity
The forum also unveiled several pertinent predictions that may shape the trajectory of humanity in the coming years. Notable among these is the expectation that by summer 2025, solar energy production will surpass that of nuclear energy for the first time, signaling a significant shift in global energy dynamics. Furthermore, experts predict that by 2028, nearly one-third of CEOs at Fortune 500 companies will possess digital twins, and by 2060, it’s anticipated that 52 out of every 100 employed individuals will operate outside the traditional workforce.
Enhancing Representation in Genomics
In a concerning statistic, participants learned that around 80% of current global genomic data is derived from individuals of European descent. This disparity has prompted calls for increased representation and diversity in genomic research to better reflect the global population.
Exploring Scientific Frontiers in Antarctica
Additionally, the UAE is making strides towards establishing a research base in Antarctica, with plans to accommodate over 50 scientists. This initiative aims to further explore the unique scientific opportunities presented by the polar environment.
