The Dubai Culture and Arts Authority (Dubai Culture) has recently unveiled an engaging initiative aimed at revitalizing the Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood, a gem in the heart of Dubai that celebrates the city’s rich heritage. This comprehensive programme is designed to foster a greater appreciation for the district’s cultural significance while enhancing its attraction for tourists and residents alike.
Spanning until the end of December, the activation will host a vibrant calendar filled with panel discussions, interactive workshops, and community talks. This programming aims to bring local traditions and crafts into the spotlight, emphasizing Dubai Culture’s commitment to sharing the city’s stories with a broader audience. Al Fahidi, with its historical architecture and cultural depth, stands as a testament to Dubai’s journey through time, and this initiative is a significant step in highlighting its importance.
A noteworthy aspect of the programme is its focus on engaging families and children in preserving the UAE’s cultural legacy. One of the key features is the ‘Family Workshops’ series, slated to occur on the first Saturday of every month. These workshops aim to immerse young participants in hands-on experiences. A standout event is the ‘Doors of Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood’ workshop, set for 28 June, which will invite children to explore the artistic details and intricate elements that characterize the area’s unique architecture. Following this, residents can participate in the ‘Barajeel and the Magic Brush’ seminar on 5 July and craft their own ‘Al Fahidi-Inspired Bookmarks’ on 2 August.
In addition to family-oriented activities, the ‘Live Demonstrations of Emirati Crafts’ programme presents an enriching opportunity for visitors to delve into the world of traditional practices. Led by experts from the Turath Centre for Traditional Handicrafts, these demonstrations will reveal the techniques, types, and stories behind various crafts, thus weaving them into the community’s collective memory. Participants can look forward to exciting workshops, including ‘Gargoor-Making’ on 12 July and ‘The Palm Tree… A Legend of Tales’ session on 16 July. The festivities will continue with traditional crafts in August, featuring workshops on ‘Safafa’ (palm frond weaving) and ‘Burqa Sewing’, among others.
Mariam Al Tamimi, Acting Director of the Heritage Sites Department at Dubai Culture, highlighted the importance of this programme, illustrating its potential to elevate Al Fahidi’s role as a tourist destination.
