Dubai Culture and Arts Authority Announces Exciting Reading Month 2025 Programme
The Dubai Culture and Arts Authority (Dubai Culture) is gearing up for an enriching Reading Month in 2025, launching a diverse array of workshops and storytelling sessions across Dubai Public Libraries. This initiative, themed ‘UAE Reads,’ aligns with the National Policy for Reading 2026, which aims to cultivate core values, enhance the literary and artistic landscape, and underscore the profound impact of literature on individuals and communities.
Commitment to a Creative Ecosystem
Dr. Saeed Mubarak bin Kharbash, the CEO of the Arts, Design and Literature Sector at Dubai Culture, emphasized the organization’s commitment to nurturing a vibrant creative ecosystem. He stated, “Reading Month has become an annual literary and intellectual event, encapsulating cultural values and advancing knowledge across society.” This initiative not only celebrates writers and intellectuals but also aims to inspire a generation poised to contribute to the nation’s development and future aspirations.
A Comprehensive Calendar of Events
Dubai Culture has meticulously curated a calendar of events for Reading Month, which runs from February 20 to March 31. Residents will have the chance to delve into various literary fields and access a wealth of books designed to enrich minds and broaden perspectives. The programme promises to be a treasure trove of opportunities for both avid readers and those looking to cultivate a new habit.
Notable Literary Discussions and Storytelling Events
Throughout the month, Dubai Public Libraries will host a series of literary discussions and storytelling events featuring prominent authors and speakers. A standout event will take place at the Al Safa Art & Design Library, in collaboration with the Sultan Bin Ali Al Owais Cultural Foundation. Renowned writer and researcher Abdul Ghaffar Hussain will present his book, ‘Witness to the Era of Zayed,’ which explores the formative years of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan in Al Ain. Additionally, author Obeid Ibrahim Bu Melha will discuss his novel ‘The Soldier’s War’ in a dedicated session at the same venue.
Workshops for Aspiring Writers and Creatives
The programme also includes a variety of workshops aimed at aspiring writers and creatives. Journalist Ayesha Sultan will lead a ‘Newspaper Article’ workshop, focusing on journalistic writing techniques. Participants will have the opportunity to visit the ‘Burj Rashid’ art exhibition for inspiration before submitting their articles for the Arab Youth Media Creativity Award.
In the ‘Library Talks’ series under the ‘School of Life’ programme, filmmaker and creative director Mustafa Jawad will conduct a workshop titled ‘Animation Essentials: From Concept to Creativity.’ This session will cover everything from idea development and scriptwriting to character design, animation techniques, and editing, providing a comprehensive overview for budding animators.
Engaging Activities for Younger Audiences
Recognizing the importance of engaging younger audiences, Dubai Public Libraries has curated an exciting lineup of interactive classes. One highlight is ‘The Pencil Who Found Himself,’ led by Ayesha Almarzooqi at Al Twar Library. This session features activities developed in collaboration with the Dubai Foundation for Women and Children, ensuring a meaningful experience for young participants.
At Al Rashidiya Library, children can enjoy a reading of ‘My Friend, the Lion’ by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, which emphasizes the values of courage and resilience. Additionally, author Maitha AlKhayat and illustrator Hessa Almheiri will lead a workshop on ‘The Pearl Diver’s Necklace and the Cowrie Necklace,’ offering insights into the creative process behind their award-winning book.
Workshops and Storytelling Sessions Across Libraries
Al Mankhool Library will host author Ruba Younes for ‘A Journey of a Book,’ shedding light on the steps involved in writing a book. Experts from ‘Arabically’ will present ‘Arabic in Nature: Pomegranate,’ exploring the linguistic and cultural significance of this fruit. Meanwhile, Umm Suqeim Library will feature three interactive storytelling sessions—‘A Long Eye’ and ‘The Turtle Looks for Its Mother’—where Eiman Sameer will engage children through environmental awareness activities.
The ‘Read’ Forum will be hosted at Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Islamic Institute and Sakina bint Al Hussein School by Al Mankhoul Library staff, featuring a series of workshops focused on the written word. A dedicated space will also showcase the diverse services and offerings of Dubai Public Libraries.
Special Events and Initiatives
Visitors to Al Safa Art & Design Library can join a reading of ‘Memory for Sale’ with author Sarah Abdullah, in collaboration with Dubai Women’s Association. Young guests at Hatta Library will celebrate Arabic language learning through the ‘Letters Balloon’ workshop, while children can embark on a journey to discover inspiring stories of remarkable figures during the ‘International Faces’ storytelling experience. Additionally, in partnership with the Kalimat Foundation, Dubai Public Libraries will host a special Braille reading session for People of Determination at Al Khawaneej Majles.
Promoting Sustainable Knowledge-Sharing
In a parallel initiative, Dubai Culture, in collaboration with the Dubai International Financial Centre, will launch a ‘Used Book Sale’ in conjunction with Zayed Humanitarian Day. This fair will provide visitors with access to an exceptional selection of books across various disciplines at prices ranging from AED 2 to AED 10, encouraging community engagement with literature and promoting a culture of sustainable knowledge-sharing.
