Filled with crispy knafeh, pistachio cream, and tahini spread, this treat became a viral sensation—largely thanks to food influencer Maria Vehera, whose TikTok video sampling the bar has racked up over 120 million views. While the chocolate’s popularity has thrilled confectionery lovers, it has also triggered a surprising consequence: a global pistachio shortage.

The Viral Star

The turning point for Dubai Chocolate came when Maria Vehera shared her enthusiastic experience on TikTok. With the lively combination of textures and flavors, it quickly captured the attention of chocolate aficionados and casual snackers alike. Following her post, renowned brands like Lindt, Nestlé, and Lidl jumped on the bandwagon, creating their own versions to meet the burgeoning demand.

In an astonishing display of popularity, Lindt’s version of the chocolate sold out within just 72 minutes on TikTok Shop. Supermarkets worldwide reported an influx of customers eager to taste this trend, leading to some even enforcing purchase limits to manage the frenzy.

The Pistachio Predicament

While the soaring demand for Dubai Chocolate has delighted many, it has also sparked significant challenges in the global pistachio market. Giles Hacking, of nut trading firm CG Hacking, explained that the pistachio industry has felt the strain as chocolatiers scramble to secure enough supplies for their products. The situation has become so severe that experts claim the pistachio market is “tapped out.”

Iran, the world’s second-largest pistachio producer, responded to this growing demand by increasing its exports to the UAE by an astonishing 40% during the harvest period from September 2024 to March 2025, compared to the previous year. This spike in demand coincides with a less-than-stellar harvest in the United States, the top global exporter, compounding the issue and further tightening the available supply.

Supply Chain Struggles

With the pistachio supply chain under pressure, chocolatiers have faced mounting challenges in procurement. Charles Jandreau, general manager of Prestat Group, which houses some of the UK’s most luxurious chocolate brands, mentioned that “no one” anticipated such a sudden surge in demand for kataifi, the shredded Middle Eastern pastry that forms a crucial component of Dubai Chocolate. Swiss chocolatier Läderach also found itself grappling with the unexpected success of its pistachio-infused creations, describing sales as “going through the roof.”

Johannes Läderach, CEO of the company, confirmed this overwhelming response, stating that their challenges stem from not being prepared for the explosive demand. As more brands release imitations of the original Dubai Chocolate, the situation becomes increasingly complex.

The Original vs. the Copycats

In an environment rife with imitation, the creators of Dubai Chocolate have not taken the rise of knockoff products lightly. British-Egyptian entrepreneur Sarah Hamouda and her husband, Yezen Alani, have voiced their frustrations over these replicas. Mr. Alani emphasized that their product is unique—a luxury, handmade confection that stands in stark contrast to the mass-produced alternatives flooding the market.

He elaborated on the craftsmanship that goes into creating their chocolate bars, highlighting that each piece is made entirely by hand, from baking to chocolate molding to the meticulous hand-picking of pistachios. This exclusive approach ensures a level of quality that mass-produced versions simply cannot match.

As the demand for Dubai Chocolate continues to rise unabated, it has left the global pistachio industry in a precarious position. Farmers and suppliers are scrambling to boost their outputs to meet the needs of chocolatiers eager to capitalize on this chocolate craze.
