Doha Design District Launches ‘Mada and Sada’: A Transformative Platform Unveiling the Creative Process

Doha, Qatar — The Doha Design District, situated in the heart of Msheireb Downtown Doha and powered by Msheireb Properties, has unveiled ‘Mada and Sada,’ an innovative platform designed to immerse visitors in the creative process of art. This initiative encourages attendees to not only observe art but to engage with the journey from conception to public expression. The terms ‘Mada’ (meaning origin or impulse) and ‘Sada’ (meaning echo or expression) encapsulate the essence of this experience, inviting exploration of both spaces as a cohesive narrative or as individual encounters.

A Celebration of Creativity

The launch event attracted a diverse audience of designers, artists, and members of Doha’s creative community. It commenced with the performance of the ‘Msheireb Symphony,’ composed by Dana Alfardan, a prominent Qatari composer and singer-songwriter. This piece, commissioned by Msheireb Downtown Doha, reflects the city’s historical legacy and its vision for a sustainable urban future. The symphony blends contemporary classical music with traditional elements, embodying the architectural spirit of Msheireb while connecting Doha’s rich cultural heritage to its modern aspirations.

Insights from Creative Leaders

Dana Kazic, Director of the Doha Design District, and Samar Maakaroun, Partner and Creative Director at Pentagram, introduced the event. Maakaroun’s studio was responsible for the visual identity of ‘Mada and Sada.’ The design of the platform draws inspiration from the architectural language of Msheireb Downtown Doha, ensuring a seamless integration with its surroundings. This connection to Arab culture and heritage is evident throughout the initiative.

Inside the ‘Mada’ space, creators Yasamin Sheikhi and Nada Al Kharashi provided an intimate glimpse into their artistic processes. They shared not only their completed works but also the uncertainties and discoveries that shaped them. In the ‘Sada’ area, 20 shortlisted proposals from the District’s Public Art Open Call were showcased, offering an unfiltered view of projects vying to redefine public spaces in Doha, each representing an ongoing dialogue.

Fostering a Collaborative Ecosystem

Kazic emphasized the belief that creativity thrives in open and collaborative environments. Through ‘Mada and Sada,’ the Doha Design District aims to create a platform for experimentation and connection among creatives, contributing to a cultural ecosystem that resonates both locally and globally. The initiative marks the beginning of a series of workshops, exhibitions, and interdisciplinary collaborations designed to bridge the gap between creative processes and public engagement.

Rather than viewing art as a finished product, ‘Mada and Sada’ presents creation as a dynamic and evolving process, continuously resonating and expanding outward.

Exploring Brand Identity and Creative Philosophy

The event also featured a special session led by Maakaroun, focusing on Pentagram’s creative philosophy. She discussed the strategic role of brand identity in translating stories and values into visual and verbal systems that shape organizational perception. This aligns with Msheireb Properties’ vision to empower the design and creative industries.

A Vision Beyond a Destination

‘Mada and Sada’ exemplifies the Doha Design District’s broader ambition to transcend being merely a destination or showcase. Since its inception, the District has maintained that design is not merely decorative but transformative, possessing the power to influence how a city thinks, feels, and evolves.

Every initiative undertaken by the District, from open calls and residencies to immersive platforms, reflects this belief. The mission is to cultivate a genuinely connected creative ecosystem, where designers have the necessary infrastructure to develop their practices, and audiences are invited into the creative process rather than kept at a distance. This exchange between creators and the public fosters a collaborative environment that generates unique outcomes.

Doha Design District as a Canvas

Embedded within the urban landscape of Msheireb Downtown Doha, the Doha Design District perceives the city itself as a canvas. It aims to transform streets, shared spaces, and galleries into living platforms where ideas, experimentation, and creativity can shape the future of Qatar’s design landscape.
