A Milestone for Viking Vela

The Viking Vela celebrated its first anniversary on December 12, 2022, marking a significant achievement for Viking Cruises. Since her maiden voyage, Vela has carved out a prominent space in the luxury cruise sector, establishing herself as the 11th ship in Viking’s impressive fleet over the last decade. Delivered by Fincantieri Shipyard in Ancona, Italy, on December 3, 2021, the Viking Vela is a unique vessel that set sail from the historic port of Civitavecchia, Italy.

Inaugural Mediterranean Season

Following her delivery, Vela embarked on her inaugural journey from Civitavecchia, allowing guests to immerse themselves in the rich culture and stunning landscapes of the Mediterranean. This first voyage offered a carefully crafted itinerary that included stops in Spain, Italy, and France. Passengers experienced the vessel’s luxury with an overnight stay in Barcelona and explored iconic locations such as Livorno, Marseille, Villefranche, and Sète during the week-long voyage.

Transition to Northern Europe

In January 2025, Viking Vela moved to Northern Europe to participate in the popular itinerary known as “In Search of the Northern Lights.” This 12-night adventure takes travelers to the Netherlands and Norway, providing breathtaking views of the aurora borealis—a sight often sought after by cruise enthusiasts.

Expanding Itineraries

After a successful initial season in Northern Europe, Viking Vela broadened its range of itineraries, incorporating more diverse routes across the region. This new programming included popular destinations like Iceland and the British Isles, offering travelers an opportunity to explore stunning new landscapes. The expanded itineraries not only catered to the evolving desires of guests, but also played a crucial role in the vessel’s early success.

A New Year of Adventures

As 2026 approached, Viking Vela entered its second year of service, repeating many of its successful itineraries from the prior season. This year kicked off with a series of Mediterranean voyages, followed by another transition to Northern Europe in January. The “In Search of the Northern Lights” series has been expanded, now running until the end of March 2026, allowing more travelers to experience this remarkable phenomenon.

Voyage Highlights

One of Viking Vela’s standout itineraries is the ambitious 28-night journey scheduled for July 2026. This adventure begins in Bergen, Norway, and sails across the North Atlantic to various stunning destinations, including Svalbard, Iceland, Greenland, and Canada. The voyage culminates in New York City, promising passengers an unforgettable experience as they witness some of the most breathtaking natural beauty in the world.

The Growing Fleet of Viking Cruises

As Viking Vela continues its operations, Viking Cruises is set to expand even further. The ship marks just the beginning of exciting developments for the company, with plans for the introduction of the Viking Vesta in 2026, along with Viking Mira and Viking Libra. This expansion reinforces Viking’s commitment to providing luxurious travel experiences that cater to the adventurous spirit of modern travelers.

The Bright Future of Viking Vela

In its inaugural year, Viking Vela has already established itself as a prominent player in the luxury cruise market, distinguished by its exceptional facilities and captivating itineraries. From Northern Europe to the Mediterranean, Vela offers numerous options for prospective cruisers, including the highly anticipated 28-night transatlantic journey set for 2026. As Viking Vela and its fleet grow, so will the range of unforgettable experiences available to discerning travelers seeking luxury on the open seas.
