Celebrating Sustainable Development through Art: The Success of SDGs through Arts – India

ZeeArts Gallery in Dubai recently marked a significant milestone with the successful completion of SDGs through Arts – India. This initiative, held in collaboration with Art Ambassador Humera Ali, took place from June 26 to 28 at the Conrad Hotel in Bengaluru. Bringing together 17 international and local artists, the event showcased the profound intersection of creativity and sustainability with a unique spin on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

A New Chapter for India’s Artistic Community

India proudly became the 16th country to join this global movement, reinforcing its commitment to using art as a transformative tool for social awareness and cultural dialogue. By participating in this initiative, India affirmed its dedication to championing the SDGs, focusing particularly on engaging creative communities in meaningful conversations about pressing global issues.

Participating artists hailed from various countries, including the UAE, Oman, France, The Netherlands, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Mauritius, Syria, and Germany. Over two days, the artists collaborated, sharing their diverse cultural narratives while creating artworks centered around the SDGs—a universal language that speaks louder than words.

Engaging the Youth

A noteworthy aspect of the initiative was its engagement with local students. On Day 2, 17 students from The Cambridge International School in Bengaluru joined the retreat. This provided them with a golden opportunity to interact directly with established artists, further bridging the gap between youth, creativity, and social consciousness. The educational experience emphasized the importance of arts in understanding and advocating for sustainable practices.

The Vernissage Gala Dinner and Art Auction

Crowning the initiative was the Vernissage Gala Dinner and Art Auction on June 28, a buzz-filled evening attended by art patrons, cultural advocates, and sustainability champions. Hosted by the charismatic Shabeer, the event began with a heartfelt welcome address from Humera Ali. She expressed gratitude to all the participating artists and partners for their commitment to this vital cause.

The evening featured a keynote speech by Zaahirah Muthy, founder and curator of ZeeArts Gallery. She passionately highlighted art’s role as a catalyst for dialogue and social transformation, urging everyone to subscribe to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. This message resonated throughout the evening, igniting a sense of purpose among attendees.

One of the night’s highlights was the live painting performance by celebrated artist Vilas Naik, whose artwork was later auctioned as part of the event proceeds. The ambiance was elevated with cultural performances, including a mesmerizing Bharatanatyam show by young talent Shruti D’sa and a musical interlude by artist Ashwini, celebrating India’s rich artistic heritage. The art auction culminated in enthusiastic bidding from collectors and philanthropists, raising funds explicitly to support initiatives under SDG 4: Quality Education.

The Global Initiative and Its Impact

The SDGs through Arts initiative was initially launched by ZeeArts Gallery during Expo 2020 Dubai in collaboration with the UN-UAE. Curated by Zaahirah Muthy, this endeavor has previously completed editions in various countries, including Mauritius, Seychelles, and Germany. The project’s expansive reach demonstrates art’s potential to unite people across borders, cultures, and disciplines to champion a sustainable future.
