Carbon Markets Africa Summit 2026 Programme Launched as Africa’s Carbon Markets Accelerate from Readiness to Delivery

Africa is positioning itself as a pivotal player in the global carbon market landscape, with increasing policy certainty and a growing number of investment-ready projects. As the global carbon markets evolve from establishing rules to facilitating actual transactions, attention is shifting towards regions capable of delivering credible supply and investment-ready initiatives at scale.

In this context, the Carbon Markets Africa Summit (CMAS), organized by VUKA Group, has unveiled its official programme for 2026. This initiative aims to transition Africa’s carbon markets from theoretical frameworks to actionable investments and transactions. Scheduled for October 13-15, 2026, in Kigali, Rwanda, the summit will be hosted by the Ministry of Environment of Rwanda, with support from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the African Development Bank (AfDB). The Development Bank of Southern Africa (DBSA) will serve as a host partner, while AUDA-NEPAD will act as the strategic institutional partner.

Connecting Policy, Projects, and Capital

CMAS is designed as a pan-African marketplace that integrates policy, project pipelines, capital, and buyers in a structured environment aimed at facilitating genuine deal flow. The 2026 programme reflects a significant shift in market dynamics, emphasizing integrity, quality, and transaction readiness as critical factors for success.

Emmanuelle Nicholls, Project Lead, stated that carbon markets are entering a more selective and operational phase. The focus has shifted from whether Africa can contribute to the carbon market to whether it can present credible projects and the necessary market infrastructure for large-scale transactions. CMAS 2026 is structured to connect the various stakeholders and resources needed to move from ambition to execution.

Foundations for Responsible Market Scaling

The summit will emphasize the essential foundations required for responsibly scaling carbon markets. Estherine Fotabong, Director at AUDA-NEPAD, highlighted that Africa’s carbon markets must be built on principles of integrity, equity, and continental coordination. This approach aims to ensure that carbon finance delivers tangible benefits for communities, ecosystems, and sustainable development across the continent.

Comprehensive Programme for Market Development

The CMAS 2026 programme encompasses the entire carbon market value chain, from policy and Article 6 implementation to project development, finance, and transactions. Key highlights will include a keynote session focused on delivering projects and capital at scale, high-level dialogues on trust and market readiness, ministerial and technical roundtables, and sessions dedicated to buyer demand, investor priorities, and deal structuring.

A notable feature of the summit will be a curated pipeline of African carbon projects, showcasing nature-based solutions, regenerative agriculture, carbon removals, waste-to-value initiatives, and blue carbon. These projects will be presented through case studies and investment-ready deal rooms.

Additionally, the programme will feature solution labs and technical workshops aimed at addressing critical bottlenecks, including Article 6 and CORSIA implementation, early-stage finance, monitoring, reporting, and verification (MRV) systems, and project bankability. Live demonstrations of digital carbon infrastructure will also be included, ensuring a focus on practical market development and delivery.

Rwanda’s Role in Advancing Carbon Market Frameworks

The CMAS 2026 will take place in Rwanda, a nation actively advancing its carbon market frameworks under Article 6. This summit is timely, as global markets increasingly prioritize integrity, quality, and real delivery at scale.
