Azmatullah Omarzai’s century leads Afghanistan to T20 series victory over Zimbabwe

Published:

Azmatullah Omarzai’s explosive century propelled Afghanistan to a thrilling 19-run victory over Zimbabwe in the second T20 match, securing a 2-0 series win. The match, held at Sharjah Cricket Stadium, saw Afghanistan post a formidable total of 221 runs, while Zimbabwe managed 202 in response, despite a valiant effort from Sikandar Raza, who scored a century of his own.

Omarzai’s innings was a standout performance, as he scored 116 runs off just 50 balls, including 12 sixes and five fours. His explosive batting helped Afghanistan recover from a precarious position of 5 for 4 after just four overs, showcasing resilience and skill. Alongside Ijaz Ahmed Ahmadzai, who contributed a quickfire 50, the duo added 142 runs for the sixth wicket, turning the tide in Afghanistan’s favor.

Match Highlights

Zimbabwe’s bowlers initially dominated, dismissing Afghanistan’s top order in rapid succession. However, the Afghan middle order responded dramatically, with Omarzai leading the charge after a slow start. The turning point came in the 11th over when Omarzai hit two sixes, shifting the momentum back to Afghanistan. The last ten overs saw Afghanistan score an astonishing 176 runs, with 120 of those coming in the final five overs.

Sikandar Raza’s effort for Zimbabwe was commendable, as he scored 106 runs off 56 balls, but he lacked support from his teammates. Despite a promising start, Zimbabwe’s batting faltered under pressure, and they fell short of the target, finishing at 202 for 5.

Afghanistan’s Dominance

This victory marks Afghanistan’s 17th win in their last 19 T20 matches against Zimbabwe, underscoring their dominance in this format. Historically, Afghanistan has consistently outperformed Zimbabwe in T20 encounters, with a head-to-head record of 17 wins out of 19 matches since 2014.

Omarzai’s century is particularly notable as he became the first player to score a T20I century batting at number six, further solidifying his place in the team’s batting lineup. The match also highlighted the challenges Zimbabwe faces in competing against a rapidly improving Afghan side, which has shown significant growth in international cricket.

As the series concludes, Afghanistan will look to build on this momentum, while Zimbabwe will need to regroup and address their inconsistencies as they prepare for future challenges.
