Azerbaijan Showcases Advanced UAV Technology at Dubai Exhibition
Introduction to Azerbaijan’s Defense Innovations
At the recent Dubai Airshow, Azerbaijan made a striking entrance in the defense sector with its showcase of innovative unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). The country was represented for the first time at this significant exhibition by the “MIRAS Military-Industrial Company” LLC, which operates under the Azerbaijan Ministry of Defence. This presence underscores Azerbaijan’s commitment to advancing its military capabilities, particularly in the realm of UAV technology.
Qartal: A Versatile Quadcopter
One of the standout models exhibited was the Qartal, a dual-role quadcopter specifically designed for both reconnaissance and combat operations. With a maximum take-off weight of 19 kilograms and an empty weight of 8 kilograms, the Qartal can accommodate various payloads. When equipped with an ISR (Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance) payload, its endurance is approximately one hour. However, this drops to 34 minutes when loaded with two mortar shells, each weighing 3 kilograms.
The Qartal is outfitted with a sophisticated optronic system that features a 640×512 thermal sensor and a daylight camera with 10x optical zoom. Its compact dimensions of 850x850x470 mm allow it to navigate effectively, reaching speeds of up to 70 km/h and operating within a range of 15 km. The UAV operates at altitudes of up to 3,500 meters above sea level.
The Qirghi Loitering Munition
Another noteworthy display was the Qirghi, a compact quadcopter loitering munition. Measuring 260x260x120 mm and weighing only 850 grams, the Qirghi can carry one of two C4 warheads, with weights of either 210 grams or 400 grams. Its endurance is approximately 20 minutes, with an operational range of up to 5 km. The Qirghi operates effectively at high speeds, reaching up to 140 km/h.
The design of the Qirghi prioritizes portability and simplicity. It is launched manually and controlled by an operator using a joystick and goggles, which are designed to be lightweight (470 grams for the joystick and 305 grams for the goggles). Such features make it remarkably user-friendly while maintaining effective combat capabilities.
Expanding Capabilities with Qirghi-S
Building on the Qirghi, the Qirghi-S offers increased firepower with a significantly larger warhead weighing 1,470 grams. This model has a slightly larger footprint of 470x470x250 mm and an empty weight of 1,100 grams. Although its endurance is slightly reduced to 17 minutes, it boasts a 10 km operational range and can reach maximum speeds of 130 km/h.
Similar to its predecessor, the Qirghi-S utilizes a joystick controller but comes with upgraded goggles and a more powerful battery, enhancing the overall performance and operational range while ensuring single-soldier operability.
The Quzghun: A Dual-Function UAV
The Quzghun quadcopter further diversifies Azerbaijan’s UAV lineup. Capable of carrying a 1 kg C4 warhead, the Quzghun is equipped for both strike and reconnaissance missions. It features a thermal imaging sensor and a fixed-focus daylight camera. With an empty mass of 4.1 kg and dimensions of 680x680x400 mm, its endurance is approximately 34 minutes, with a range of 15 km.
The ground control station for the Quzghun is more robust, weighing 2.4 kg, which allows for enhanced operational capabilities. Its operational altitude remains within 500 meters, with a ceiling of up to 3,500 meters.
Emerging Technologies and Future Developments
Among the exciting new technologies displayed was an unnamed vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) UAV, currently in development but not yet in production. This unique UAV, characterized by its cylindrical fuselage and delta wings with electric motors, is designed for high-speed operations, capable of reaching speeds of up to 300 km/h. While specifics remain scarce, its aerodynamic design shows promise for various applications.
Although some designs exhibited bear similarities to UAVs produced by other countries, such as Turkey, the unique specifications of Azerbaijan’s UAVs highlight the nation’s aim to develop autonomous solutions in military technology.
Conclusion
The unveiling of these UAVs marks a significant step in Azerbaijan’s efforts to strengthen its defense capabilities. With innovations like the Qartal, Qirghi, and Quzghun, Azerbaijan is not only enhancing its military technology but also carving out its niche in an increasingly competitive global defense market.
