Dubai Police Strengthen Ramadan Begging Crackdown
In Dubai, law enforcement has intensified its efforts against begging during Ramadan, resulting in the arrest of 37 individuals from various nationalities in the second week of the holy month. The actions were taken by the General Department of Criminal Investigation at Dubai Police as part of the ongoing ‘Combat Begging’ initiative.
Collaborative Efforts
The campaign is conducted in collaboration with the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs, along with the Islamic Affairs and Charitable Activities Department. Brigadier Ali Salem Al Shamsi, who oversees the Suspicious Persons and Criminal Phenomena Department, noted that the initiative has seen significant success, with the number of begging cases steadily declining due to stringent legal measures.
Al Shamsi highlighted that beggars frequently take advantage of the spirit of compassion that characterizes Ramadan, employing various tactics, including involving children and individuals with disabilities, to elicit sympathy and solicit donations unlawfully.
Public Awareness and Reporting
Dubai Police have urged the community to refrain from responding to such practices. It emphasized that contributions should only be made through recognized charitable organizations to ensure that aid reaches those genuinely in need.
Members of the public can report instances of begging by calling 901, via the ‘Police Eye’ feature of the Dubai Police mobile application, or by using the online ‘e-Crime platform’.
