AUBMC Strengthens Regional Healthcare with Installation of Middle East’s First BlueSeal XE MRI System
The American University of Beirut Medical Center (AUBMC) has marked a significant advancement in healthcare technology by installing the Middle East’s first Philips BlueSeal XE MRI system. This initiative underscores AUBMC’s commitment to enhancing healthcare in Lebanon and the broader region through cutting-edge diagnostic and treatment technologies.
Launch Ceremony Highlights Collaboration
The launch event was attended by key figures including AUB President Fadlo R. Khuri, Dr. Weam Abou Hamdan, Director General of the Ministry of Public Health, and Ambassador Frank Mollen of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Their presence, along with various government officials, AUBMC and Philips leadership, and members of the medical community, highlighted the importance of this technological advancement.
Breakthrough Imaging Capabilities
The BlueSeal XE MRI system is designed to significantly improve patient experience and diagnostic accuracy. It features Smart Speed Precise, a next-generation acceleration technique powered by Dual AI innovation, which allows scans to be completed up to three times faster. The system enhances image sharpness by up to 80 percent and minimizes ringing artifacts, thereby improving diagnostic confidence and precision. This technology not only reduces examination time and costs but also enhances patient comfort during the imaging process.
Additionally, the platform supports AI-driven reporting and immediate scan-quality assessments tailored to specific clinical needs, including cancer imaging and chronic neurological diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Multiple Sclerosis.
Commitment to Excellence in Healthcare
Fadlo R. Khuri expressed gratitude towards Philips and Intermedic for their collaboration, emphasizing that the new MRI system symbolizes AUBMC’s commitment to excellence. He stated that it reflects the institution’s determination to provide the best healthcare available to the people of Lebanon and the region.
Dr. Weam Abou Hamdan reaffirmed the Ministry of Public Health’s commitment to digital transformation and collaboration with academic healthcare institutions. He noted that AUB has long been a leader in medical excellence and that this achievement reinforces Lebanon’s position in medical innovation despite ongoing challenges.
International Recognition of Innovation
Ambassador Frank Mollen commended the collaboration between Philips and AUBMC, stating that the installation exemplifies how Dutch innovation can enhance Lebanese medical excellence. He highlighted the potential for faster diagnoses and improved patient care as a result of this partnership.
Dr. Raymond Sawaya, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, remarked on the significance of advanced technology in providing high-quality patient care. He expressed pride in partnering with Philips to acquire the BlueSeal MRI system, which promises to deliver superior imaging capabilities.
Ongoing Commitment to Healthcare Advancement
Joseph Otayek, Director of AUBMC, emphasized the necessity of continuous investment and innovation in healthcare, even amid Lebanon’s challenges. He stated that AUBMC is determined to lead in healthcare advancements, ensuring that people have access to quality medical services.
Dr. Ghina Berjawi, Chair of the Department of Diagnostic Radiology, noted that the unveiling of the BlueSeal MRI is a reaffirmation of AUBMC’s commitment to patients and scientific excellence. She expressed hope for a future where world-class healthcare is sustainable and accessible in Beirut.
Final Optimization and Future Implications
The project was executed in close collaboration between AUBMC’s teams and Philips specialists, with ongoing optimization to ensure the highest clinical performance. Mohammed Saleh, Philips Country Manager for the Levant region, stated that the partnership demonstrates how intelligent systems can enhance patient care. He highlighted that the elimination of helium refills simplifies operations and enhances care continuity for patients and physicians.
The event concluded with presentations showcasing the innovative features of the BlueSeal XE MRI system, distinguishing it from conventional MRI machines.
AUBMC’s Department of Diagnostic Radiology is the largest in Lebanon, utilizing advanced imaging technology and interventional therapies. Despite recent adversities, AUBMC continues to invest in state-of-the-art medical technologies, including the BlueSeal XE MRI system and the complete renovation of the Suhayl M. Uthman Endoscopy Unit.
The adoption of the BlueSeal XE MRI system positions AUBMC as a regional hub for diagnostic excellence and advanced imaging training, fostering knowledge transfer and improved clinical outcomes for current and future generations.
