Alejandro Davidovich Fokina triumphed over Rafael Jodar in a thrilling final at the Shanghai Masters on Sunday, securing his first major title with a comeback victory of 1-6, 7-6(5), 6-4. This win not only marks a significant milestone in Davidovich Fokina’s career but also propels him back into the ATP’s top 20 rankings.

Davidovich Fokina, seeded 25th, faced a formidable challenge from the 20-year-old Jodar, who was making history as the youngest finalist in the tournament’s history. Jodar started strong, breaking serve early to take a commanding 5-1 lead in the first set, which he clinched with relative ease.

However, the match took a turn in the second set as Davidovich Fokina began to find his rhythm. He battled back from a break down and showcased resilience by saving multiple break points during crucial service games. His efforts culminated in a tightly contested tiebreak, which he won to level the match.

The decisive third set saw Davidovich Fokina capitalize on his momentum, breaking Jodar’s serve twice. He ultimately sealed the victory after two hours and 27 minutes of intense play, marking a significant achievement in his professional journey.

With this victory, Davidovich Fokina is poised to return to the ATP’s top 20 when the new rankings are released on Monday, a notable comeback after reaching a career-high ranking of 14th in November of the previous year. This win at the Shanghai Masters not only enhances his standing but also sets the stage for future successes on the ATP tour.
