Agility Logistics Park in Ghana Achieves EDGE Advanced Certification for Energy Efficiency
Agility, a prominent multi-business operator and long-term investor in global and regional enterprises, has announced that its Agility Logistics Park (ALP) in Tema, Ghana, has received EDGE Advanced certification. This recognition is awarded for the park’s energy-efficient and resource-conserving green buildings. With this latest certification, the total number of EDGE Advanced-certified warehouses within the ALP network now stands at 17, marking a significant milestone as certified facilities are now present in every country where Agility Logistics Parks operates.
Understanding EDGE Certification
EDGE, which stands for Excellence in Design for Greater Efficiencies, is an internationally recognized standard for energy-efficient buildings. The certification process is overseen by the International Finance Corporation (IFC), the private sector arm of the World Bank Group. To achieve EDGE Advanced certification, a building must demonstrate a minimum reduction of 40% in energy use, water consumption, and embodied carbon in materials compared to standard local buildings.
Features of Agility Logistics Park Ghana
The Agility Logistics Park in Ghana spans 160,000 square meters and is strategically located in the Tema Free Zone, adjacent to Tema port and near the capital city, Accra. This facility provides international-standard warehouse space tailored for both multinational corporations and local businesses. Notably, all five warehouses within the Ghana ALP have been certified as EDGE Advanced.
The EDGE Advanced warehouses in Accra achieve remarkable energy savings of 68%, along with water savings of 38%. Additionally, they utilize construction materials that contain 63% less embodied carbon compared to other facilities in the market.
Commitment to Sustainability
Charles Gassoub, Vice President of Agility Africa, emphasized the significance of this certification, stating that it reflects the company’s commitment to developing energy-efficient and resource-conserving facilities that align with global sustainability standards. He noted that this achievement brings direct benefits to customers, including reduced utility costs and enhanced operational efficiency, while also supporting their environmental, social, and governance (ESG) objectives.
Nathalie Kouassi Akon, IFC’s Ghana Division Director, highlighted the importance of this certification in promoting green buildings in Ghana. She remarked that projects like the Agility Logistics Park not only lower operational costs for businesses but also contribute to Ghana’s development goals and long-term economic resilience. The IFC is proud to support partners like Agility in establishing new benchmarks for sustainable industrial infrastructure in the region.
Expanding Agility’s Presence
Agility Logistics Parks are designed as secure, connected complexes that operate 24/7, featuring high-quality warehouses equipped with advanced engineering and sustainability features. In addition to the 160,000 square meter facility in Ghana, Agility operates a 470,000 square meter park in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire; a 320,000 square meter facility in Maputo, Mozambique; a 270,000 square meter park in Lagos, Nigeria (currently under development); and a 270,000 square meter Yanmu East logistics park in Cairo, Egypt, developed in partnership with Hassan Allam Utilities.
Geoffrey White, CEO of Agility Africa, stated that achieving EDGE Advanced certification across their warehouse parks in Africa is a crucial component of their strategy to establish a network of secure and efficient facilities across the continent. The expanding portfolio of Agility warehouse parks plays a vital role in providing the necessary infrastructure for growth for both global and local businesses.
Facilitating Market Expansion
Agility’s logistics parks offer ready-built warehouses for lease, catering to various business needs such as storage, distribution, e-commerce, packaging, processing, and light manufacturing. This flexibility enables companies to expand or enter new markets more efficiently, minimizing capital requirements and reducing time to market. As a result, Agility’s warehouse parks enhance the attractiveness and competitiveness of African markets.
