Africa Energy Forum 2026: Strengthening Infrastructure for a Sustainable Industrial Future

The Africa Energy Forum (AEF) is set to take place from June 16 to June 19, 2026, in Cape Town, South Africa. This event will convene key stakeholders, including companies, investors, and government representatives, who are pivotal in advancing Africa’s transition from energy access to large-scale industrial infrastructure.

Key Developments in Energy Infrastructure

The forum will showcase a diverse array of companies that are investing in critical transmission infrastructure, developing mining corridors, and financing baseload energy capacity essential for heavy industry. Notably, Sun Africa, a leading sponsor, is at the forefront of initiatives that are shaping the continent’s industrial landscape.

Adam Cortese, CEO of Sun Africa, expressed enthusiasm about the upcoming summit, highlighting the caliber of investment and commitment from participants. He noted that the focus on financing baseload capacity and renewable projects is indicative of the long-term vision necessary for Africa’s industrial future.

Major Players and Their Contributions

Companies such as ACWA Power, Infinity Power, and AMEA Power are actively engaged in establishing gigawatt-scale renewable energy projects throughout Africa. Globeleq and TotalEnergies are also playing significant roles by financing and operating projects that exemplify how private capital can facilitate the development of industrial-grade infrastructure. British International Investment and the International Finance Corporation (IFC) are working on structuring deals that blend concessional and commercial financing to attract sovereign wealth fund investments. Meanwhile, Nedbank CIB is instrumental in providing sustainable finance solutions that enable projects to achieve financial closure.

Simon Gosling, Managing Director of EnergyNet, emphasized that this year’s agenda will concentrate on the physical components of industrialization, including steel, concrete, and transmission lines, which are crucial for shaping Africa’s industrial future.

Challenges and Opportunities

The companies involved in this transformation face several challenges, including the need to create bankable projects where perceived risks may outweigh actual performance. They must also navigate the complexities of transporting critical minerals from extraction sites to processing facilities, as well as building transmission corridors that serve both mining operations and urban centers.

Cape Town serves as an ideal backdrop for these discussions, as South Africa is currently addressing issues related to private transmission investments, energy trading, and the deployment of renewable energy driven by mining activities. The city’s ongoing reforms provide a relevant case study for the rest of the continent.

The forum’s agenda includes a dedicated two-day stream on critical minerals, focusing on downstream processing, transport corridors, and value capture from reserves that account for over 30% of global supply. Sessions will explore infrastructure models such as the Lobito Corridor, Liberty Corridor, and Simandou, which are essential for large-scale project financing.

Focus on Transmission and Energy Trading

Discussions on transmission and baseload energy will cover topics such as grid expansion, private investment structures, and the need for 24/7 energy availability for data centers and manufacturing facilities. Energy trading sessions will delve into how sponsors are innovating project finance through creditworthy off-take agreements. Additionally, technology discussions will address the role of artificial intelligence in revenue protection and compliance with the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM).

The forum’s structure is designed to facilitate deal-making, featuring closed-door roundtables that will bring together Development Finance Institutions (DFIs), sovereign wealth funds, Middle Eastern ministers, utilities, regulators, and private sector leaders for candid discussions on capital deployment.

Notable Speakers and Regional Insights

The event will feature prominent figures from both the public and private sectors, including H.E. Honourable Dr. Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, Minister of Electricity and Energy in South Africa; H.E. Honourable Samantha Graham-Marè, Deputy Minister of Electricity and Energy; and Dan Marokane, Group Chief Executive of Eskom. Other notable speakers include H.E. Honourable Jeremiah Kpan Koung, Vice President of Liberia, and H.E. Honourable Lerato Mataboge, African Union Commissioner for Infrastructure and Energy.

Regional fireside chats will highlight opportunities across North, East, South, and West Africa. The first day will include ministerial sessions featuring representatives from Sierra Leone’s Ministry of Energy and The Gambia’s Ministry of Environment, Climate Change, and Natural Resources.

Additional sponsors supporting the program include AKSA as Exhibitor Sponsor, with lead sponsorship from Synergy Consulting, ATIDI, Engie, the European Investment Bank, Standard Bank, Red Rocket, USP&E Global, and Sungrow.

Youth Engagement and Future Initiatives

On the final day, the Youth Energy Summit (YES!) will take place under the theme “Empowering Today’s Entrepreneurs – Building Tomorrow’s Industrialists.” This segment will showcase scalable initiatives aimed at creating entrepreneurship opportunities within Africa’s energy sector. Industry partners will lead interactive workshops designed to equip 600 young attendees with practical skills.
