Afreximbank Unveils Instances of Exceptional Moments of Hunger: A New Anthology Showcasing 19 Emerging Writers from Africa and the Caribbean
African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) has announced the release of Instances of Exceptional Moments of Hunger, a new anthology featuring short stories developed during the 2024 CANEX Creative Writing Workshop. This initiative, part of the Creative Africa Nexus (CANEX) program, aims to discover and elevate new literary voices from Africa and the Caribbean.
A Diverse Collection of Voices
The anthology brings together nineteen writers from sixteen countries across Global Africa. It presents a rich tapestry of contemporary storytelling that spans various geographies, languages, and lived experiences. The stories were developed through a selective workshop process, with many being translated from Arabic, French, and Portuguese into English to broaden their accessibility to a global audience.
Published in collaboration with Narrative Landscape Press, an independent African publisher based in Nairobi and Lagos, Instances of Exceptional Moments of Hunger delves into themes of identity, resilience, longing, and transformation. It offers readers insight into the emotional and cultural landscapes that shape a new generation of literary talent.
Strategic Investment in Creative Futures
Mrs. Kanayo Awani, Executive Vice President of Intra-African Trade and Export Development, emphasized the anthology’s significance. She stated that it represents more than just a collection of stories; it is a strategic investment in Africa’s creative future. Through initiatives like the CANEX Creative Writing Workshop, Afreximbank is nurturing talent and building a pipeline of globally competitive intellectual property that can transcend borders and formats, including literature, film, and television.
Dr. Eghosa Imasuen, publisher at Narrative Landscape Press, noted the workshop’s purpose: to provide emerging prose writers from the continent and the diaspora with a protected space for craft and growth. He expressed confidence that readers would recognize the arrival of these writers through the anthology.
Positioning African Storytelling Globally
The anthology marks a significant milestone in Afreximbank’s efforts to position African storytelling within the global creative economy. As the copyright holder, CANEX Creations Inc. (CCInc), the intellectual property investment subsidiary supported by Afreximbank’s Fund for Export Development in Africa (FEDA), will assist in the anthology’s commercialization and visibility. This includes exploring opportunities to adapt select works into films and television series.
The quality and ambition of the anthology are further underscored by the fact that the African works included have been submitted for consideration for the Caine Prize for African Writing, one of the most prestigious awards in African literature.
Supporting Creative Industries in Africa
The CANEX Creative Writing Workshop is part of Afreximbank’s broader CANEX program, which aims to catalyze the growth of Africa’s creative industries as a driver of economic development, job creation, and export diversification. With this publication, Afreximbank continues to demonstrate its commitment to empowering emerging talent and amplifying African voices on the global stage.
Instances of Exceptional Moments of Hunger is now available in paperback on Amazon and through Narrative Landscape Press.
