UAE’s Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement with DR Congo officially takes effect

Published:

The Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) between the United Arab Emirates and the Democratic Republic of Congo has officially taken effect, heralding a new era of trade and investment opportunities. This agreement aims to eliminate tariffs on most goods, streamline customs procedures, and reduce trade barriers, thereby facilitating smoother business operations between the two nations.

The CEPA is anticipated to significantly enhance investment in critical sectors such as logistics, energy, and manufacturing, while also bolstering the UAE’s access to markets throughout Central and Eastern Africa. This development is particularly noteworthy given that non-oil trade between the UAE and the Democratic Republic of Congo reached $3.5 billion in 2025, reflecting a substantial 38.5% increase from the previous year.

Strategic Economic Ties

The Democratic Republic of Congo is recognized as a major global supplier of essential minerals, including cobalt and copper, which are vital for electronics and clean energy technologies. The UAE Minister of Foreign Trade, Dr. Thani bin Ahmed Al Zeyoudi, emphasized that the CEPA will provide UAE businesses with enhanced access to the African market, fostering deeper private-sector partnerships and investment opportunities.

This agreement is part of the UAE’s broader strategy to strengthen its economic ties globally. With 40 Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreements concluded to date, 20 of which are currently in force, the UAE is positioning itself as a key player in international trade.

Implications for Businesses

As the CEPA comes into effect, businesses in both the UAE and the Democratic Republic of Congo are expected to benefit from reduced operational costs and increased market access. The agreement not only simplifies trade processes but also encourages collaboration between private sectors in both countries, paving the way for innovative partnerships and investment ventures.

In conclusion, the implementation of the CEPA marks a significant milestone in UAE-Congo relations, promising to unlock new avenues for economic growth and cooperation. As both nations navigate this new landscape, the focus will likely remain on leveraging their respective strengths to foster mutual benefits.

According to WAM, the agreement is expected to have a lasting impact on trade dynamics in the region.
