Hyron Andrews, former Sale rugby player, died of natural causes, autopsy confirms

Hyron Andrews, the former Sale rugby player, died of natural causes, as confirmed by an autopsy following his sudden passing at a hotel in France. The 31-year-old, who recently joined the Johannesburg-based Lions, suffered a tear in the aorta, a serious condition that can lead to fatal complications.

Andrews was found unconscious in a shower cubicle before a Champions Cup match against La Rochelle. Initial investigations suggested he may have experienced a fall or a heart attack, but the autopsy revealed the cause to be an aneurysm, where a bulging blood vessel ruptures. This rare medical condition can be triggered by undetected high blood pressure or congenital defects.

His body has yet to be returned to South Africa, and his wife, Maighlin, has requested “respect, privacy and patience during this difficult time as the repatriation process begins,” according to a statement from the Lions. Andrews leaves behind two young sons.

In a show of solidarity, his teammates proceeded with their match against La Rochelle, honoring Andrews with a minute’s silence before kick-off. The visiting team received applause from home fans, highlighting the respect and admiration held for Andrews within the rugby community. Sale Rugby also expressed their condolences, with director of rugby Alex Sanderson stating that Andrews was beloved by his teammates, who cherished their time with him.

The tragic incident has sent shockwaves through the rugby world, prompting discussions about the importance of health monitoring for athletes. As the rugby community mourns the loss of a talented player, the focus now shifts to supporting his family during this challenging time.
