SpaceX reports 161% revenue increase to $14.58 billion, driven by AI growth

Published:

SpaceX has reported a remarkable 161% increase in third-quarter revenue, reaching $14.58 billion, driven primarily by a surge in its artificial intelligence (AI) business. This growth significantly surpassed analysts’ expectations, with net income climbing to $4.4 billion compared to a loss of $1.1 billion in the same period last year, as detailed by Chief Financial Officer Bret Johnsen.

The substantial revenue boost was largely attributed to SpaceX’s AI operations, which generated $7.56 billion during the quarter—nearly ten times the revenue from the previous year. This growth was fueled by the company’s strategy of renting data-center capacity to developers, including notable clients like Anthropic and Google, rather than relying solely on its own AI models. The results indicate that SpaceX’s investments in AI are beginning to yield significant financial returns, although the company continues to face rising costs associated with expanding its computing infrastructure.

Capital Expenditure and AI Infrastructure

SpaceX’s capital expenditure nearly tripled to $19.6 billion in the third quarter, reflecting the company’s aggressive expansion of its data-center capacity to support its AI ambitions. Johnsen indicated that the company anticipates capital expenditures to reach between $35 billion and $40 billion in the fourth quarter. This investment is part of a broader strategy to position SpaceX not only as a leader in space and satellite communications but also as a significant player in the computing infrastructure market.

Starlink’s Subscriber Growth

In addition to its AI business, SpaceX’s connectivity segment, which includes its Starlink satellite internet service, generated $5.2 billion in revenue, exceeding analysts’ estimates. Starlink’s subscriber base grew to 13.6 million, surpassing expectations, although the average revenue per user declined from $99 to $69 due to the introduction of more affordable plans as the service expands into new international markets.

Potential Merger with Tesla

During the earnings call, Elon Musk revealed that SpaceX and Tesla have formed special committees to explore a potential merger, a move that could create synergies across AI software, chip design, and robotics. Musk emphasized that while he believes a merger could be beneficial, it ultimately depends on the committees’ discussions and shareholder approval. He noted that any agreement would require careful consideration of transaction terms.

As SpaceX continues to evolve, its latest financial results underscore a significant shift in its business model, with AI infrastructure emerging as a critical growth driver alongside its traditional space operations. Musk has projected that annual recurring revenue could reach between $500 billion and $1 trillion by the end of 2027, driven by the increasing demand for data-center capacity amid the ongoing AI boom.

According to Economy Middle East, the developments at SpaceX not only highlight the company’s financial resilience but also its strategic pivot towards becoming a major player in the AI and computing sectors.
