Ukraine’s Zelenskyy reports no warning from allies as Russia launches extensive missile attacks

Published:

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported that Ukraine received no advance warning from its allies before a significant Russian missile strike that occurred overnight, marking one of the most extensive air assaults in recent months. The attack, which involved 16 ballistic missiles targeting Kyiv and over 200 drones across the country, resulted in power outages affecting more than half a million households.

The missile strikes, which spanned from Kharkiv and Dnipro in the east to Odesa in the south and Volyn and Rivne in the west, caused damage to more than ten energy facilities, according to Zelenskyy. The attacks resulted in casualties, including one woman in Kyiv and two individuals in the industrial city of Kryvyi Rih.

In a statement on the Telegram app, Zelenskyy expressed frustration over the lack of early warning from international partners, stating, “Another Russian ballistic missile attack came in several waves overnight, and once again, there was no early warning from our partners.” He criticized the delays in missile deliveries for Ukraine’s air defense and suggested that such actions reflect a denial of reality by allies regarding the ongoing threat from Russia.

Intelligence Sharing Concerns

The issue of intelligence sharing has become increasingly contentious amid rising tensions between Zelenskyy and the U.S. administration. Throughout the nearly five-year conflict, Ukraine has relied heavily on U.S. intelligence to detect Russian missile launches and provide timely warnings. Yurii Ihnat, a spokesman for the Ukrainian air force, confirmed that while no warning was received before the first missile strike, information was provided ahead of a subsequent attack. “For some reason, no information was received the first time, a matter our experts are investigating together with our partners,” Ihnat stated.

In response to Zelenskyy’s claims, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio denied that the United States had paused any intelligence sharing with Ukraine, contradicting the Ukrainian president’s assertions that cooperation had been briefly curtailed.

Impact on Infrastructure and Civilian Life

Ukrainian air defenses reportedly intercepted 247 targets, including four cruise missiles and 243 drones. The Russian Defense Ministry characterized the operation as a “massive strike” aimed at Ukrainian defense industry facilities, drone and missile storage sites, and data centers. Ukrainian Prime Minister Sergii Koretskyi noted that the energy sector was a primary target, leading to the implementation of rolling blackouts across the country as crews worked to restore power.

Damage from the strikes extended beyond energy infrastructure, affecting railway stations, pharmaceutical warehouses, commercial properties, and residential buildings. In Kyiv, a subway station was hit, and a 25-storey residential building sustained damage, as reported by Mayor Vitali Klitschko.

The ongoing conflict and recent escalation highlight the critical need for effective communication and intelligence sharing among Ukraine’s allies, as the country continues to face significant military challenges from Russia.
