The Mediterranean Sea is undergoing significant ecological changes due to climate change, which is primarily driven by the combustion of fossil fuels. This warming trend is facilitating the invasion of numerous non-native fish species, such as lionfish and pufferfish, posing serious threats to native biodiversity, fisheries, and the livelihoods of coastal communities.

Climate Change as a Catalyst for Invasive Species

Scientists have identified the Mediterranean as a climate change “hot spot,” with projections indicating that water temperatures could rise by 2 to 6 degrees Celsius (3.6 to 10.8 degrees Fahrenheit) by the year 2100. This increase in temperature is expected to lead to more frequent and intense heat waves, as highlighted by the Mediterranean Experts on Climate and Environmental Change, an independent scientific network.

Ronan McAdam, an oceanographer at the Euro-Mediterranean Center on Climate Change, explained that the Mediterranean’s enclosed nature prevents heat from dissipating, exacerbating the warming effect. This has created a conducive environment for invasive species, including the spotted pufferfish, which has been labeled as a “voracious predator” and the “worst invader” by marine biologist Ernesto Azzuro from the Italian National Research Council’s Institute for Marine Biological Resources and Biotechnology.

The Impact on Native Species and Coastal Communities

The introduction of invasive species has accelerated since the early 2000s, coinciding with rising sea temperatures. The U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization’s General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean reported that while invasive species have been present for decades, their spread has intensified in recent years. For instance, the lionfish was first recorded in the eastern Mediterranean in 2012 and has since expanded rapidly westward.

Azzuro noted that the Mediterranean is becoming increasingly inhospitable for native species, particularly in its eastern regions. He stated, “The Mediterranean of our grandfathers, of our elders, and of the Greeks, of ancient Greece is lost forever. So many of those changes are irreversible.” Coastal communities are already feeling the repercussions, as local fish stocks like the red mullet have been supplanted by invasive species, leading to diminished catches for fishers.

Cyprus, due to its proximity to the Suez Canal, has been among the first to experience the adverse effects of these invasive fish. The rise of rabbitfish, which consume algae from the sea bottom, threatens the habitats of many indigenous species.

Urgent Need for Action

Piero Genovesi Papik, a zoologist with Italy’s Higher Institute for Environmental Protection and Research, emphasized the urgent need to reduce fossil fuel consumption to mitigate climate change. He stated that while solutions are known, they require a global and collaborative approach.

Azzuro reported that approximately 1,000 invasive species have been identified in the Mediterranean, with 800 of them firmly established. The ecological consequences are stark; the shallows of the eastern Mediterranean have lost 93% of their mollusk population, and along the Adriatic coast, nearly all mussels have died off due to rising temperatures that have occasionally exceeded 30 degrees Celsius (86 degrees Fahrenheit).

Addressing Human Health Risks

In response to the growing threat of invasive species, Azzuro’s institute launched a campaign titled “Beware of those four” to raise awareness about the health risks posed by these species. For example, the pufferfish is toxic and can be lethal if consumed, while the lionfish has poisonous spikes that can cause severe injuries.

Scientists are exploring ways for coastal communities to adapt. One approach involves commercializing edible invasive species, while another suggests compensating fishers for catching inedible species like the pufferfish for incineration. Some invasive species, such as the lionfish, have economic potential due to their high market prices, but fishers have yet to capitalize on the invasive dusky spinefoot, which has proliferated in Italian waters.

Mitigating Future Invasions

While it may be too late to reverse the spread of invasive species in the Mediterranean, Papik outlined practical measures to mitigate their impact. He stressed the importance of enforcing international treaties that require national authorities to treat ballast waters in incoming ships, which could reduce the introduction of new alien species by 95 to 99%. Additionally, treating ship hulls with specialized paint can help prevent unwanted hitchhikers from attaching.

Changes to fishing policies are also being considered to allow native species to recover. This includes promoting the growth of mollusks that are less vulnerable to invasive species like the blue crab. Papik stated that the challenge moving forward will be to find innovative ways to restore the marine environment.
