Emirates Commits Over €100 Million to Launch Daily Flights, Boosting Connectivity and Creating Hundreds of Jobs in Berlin and Stuttgart

Emirates Airlines has announced its readiness to introduce daily flights to Berlin and Stuttgart, pledging an investment exceeding €100 million annually in operational costs, staffing, airport fees, fuel, and other expenditures. This initiative is contingent upon approval from the German Federal Ministry of Transport.

Enhancing Connectivity in Germany’s Economic Hubs

Berlin, with a population of 3.9 million, serves as the political nucleus of Europe’s largest economy. The city boasts a vibrant start-up ecosystem, a well-established diplomatic community, and a rich cultural scene that attracts millions of tourists each year. However, its long-haul flight connectivity has not kept pace with its global standing. According to OAG schedule data, over 85% of international flights from Berlin Brandenburg Airport are concentrated within Europe.

Similarly, Stuttgart, the economic powerhouse of Baden-Württemberg, faces a significant gap in long-haul air services. This region is vital for manufacturers, suppliers, and trading partners who rely on robust air connectivity.

Sir Tim Clark, President of Emirates Airline, stated that the airline is prepared to enhance long-haul connectivity to these key cities, emphasizing the demand expressed by German businesses and the Berlin Chamber of Commerce. He noted that Emirates currently connects Germany to 50 destinations across Africa, the Middle East, Southeast Asia, and Australasia, which are not served by any German airline.

Economic Impact and Job Creation

The introduction of Emirates routes to Berlin and Stuttgart is projected to generate hundreds of jobs. A study conducted by the German Aerospace Centre (DLR) in 2012 estimated that a daily Emirates service to both cities could create nearly 1,000 direct and indirect jobs, a figure that remains relevant today.

In addition to passenger benefits, the cargo capacity for Baden-Württemberg, Berlin, and Brandenburg would see a significant enhancement. A daily widebody service utilizing a Boeing 777-300ER would provide over 280 tonnes of cargo capacity weekly, facilitating the transport of time-sensitive goods such as pharmaceuticals, electrical equipment, and machinery.

Dubai: A Strategic Hub for Global Connectivity

In 2025, Emirates transported 2.36 million passengers to and from Germany, with 40% traveling directly between Dubai and Germany, and 60% connecting onward. This highlights Dubai’s dual role as both a premium travel destination and a global transfer hub. If daily flights to Berlin and Stuttgart are approved, Emirates would provide seamless one-stop connections for travelers and businesses in these regions.

Emirates’ top markets to and from Germany in 2025 included Australia, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, and Vietnam, none of which are currently served by German airlines from Frankfurt or Munich. The addition of these routes would not only fill a significant gap but also enhance travel options for passengers.

The Emirates experience promises a consistent onboard product across its four-cabin configuration, offering a superior alternative to the multi-transfer narrow-body services currently available. The airline’s Premium Economy cabin provides enhanced comfort, while its First Class features enclosed private suites and personalized service, setting a high standard in the industry.

Addressing the Need for Improved Long-Haul Services

The business community in Berlin has expressed a clear demand for improved long-haul services. A 2023 survey by the Berlin Chamber of Commerce and Industry revealed that 75% of respondents considered the city’s long-haul offerings inadequate. Dubai emerged as a top priority for enhanced connections, both as a destination and as a transfer hub.

Currently, Berlin and Stuttgart are served exclusively by narrow-body aircraft with limited amenities, and only on a seasonal basis. The introduction of a daily Emirates Boeing 777 service would significantly enhance both passenger experience and cargo capacity.

Unlocking High-Value Inbound Tourism

Germany recorded nearly 1.2 million overnight stays from GCC visitors in 2024, a lucrative tourism segment known for longer stays and higher spending, contributing approximately €2.3 billion to the German economy. The German National Tourist Board anticipates that GCC visitor numbers will reach 3 million annually by the end of the decade.

Direct Emirates services would firmly position Berlin and Stuttgart as attractive destinations for GCC visitors, tapping into a tourism segment with substantial growth potential by connecting these cities with travelers who prefer destinations served by widebody aircraft.

Emirates is committed to engaging constructively with the German Federal Government, aiming to bring the benefits of long-haul connectivity to Berlin and Stuttgart. The airline believes that these services will complement Germany’s existing aviation landscape, providing travelers and businesses with greater choice and competition on essential routes.
