Dubai Chambers and Ministry of Economy Strengthen Family Business Sustainability at Forum

Dubai Chambers, in collaboration with the Ministry of Economy and Tourism and the Indian Business and Professional Council, hosted a family business forum on Monday. The event aimed to explore strategies for enhancing the sustainability of family enterprises within the UAE.

Focus on Governance and Best Practices

The forum emphasized the importance of strengthening governance capabilities and promoting the adoption of international best practices among the Indian family business community in Dubai. The session was attended by Abdulla bin Touq Al Marri, Minister of Economy and Tourism, and Mohammad Ali Rashed Lootah, President and CEO of Dubai Chambers.

During the event, the significance of Federal Decree Law No. (37) of 2022 on Family Businesses was highlighted. This legislation is designed to enhance the flexibility of legal frameworks governing family businesses, thereby fostering a supportive environment for their growth and adaptability to economic changes.

Legislative Support for Family Businesses

Abdulla bin Touq Al Marri remarked that family businesses are crucial drivers of the UAE’s economic growth and sustainability. He noted that they play a vital role in the UAE’s vision for a future economy centered on knowledge and innovation. The Family Business Law is seen as a pioneering piece of legislation that positions the UAE as a leader in supporting family enterprises both regionally and globally.

He further stated that the ministry has launched the Unified Family Business Registry, a comprehensive federal platform providing essential services for family businesses. This includes company registration, issuance of certificates, and the deposit of family charters, all aimed at ensuring continuity in management and operations.

Call to Action for Family Enterprises

The Minister urged all family businesses operating in the UAE to register with the Unified Family Business Registry to take advantage of its services. He emphasized that the UAE offers a flexible and competitive business environment, with opportunities for growth across more than 2,000 economic activities.

Family businesses significantly contribute to the UAE’s economy, accounting for 60% of the GDP, employing 80% of the workforce, and representing approximately 90% of all private companies. Their operations span various sectors, including hospitality, retail, real estate, and construction, underscoring their role in economic diversification.

Commitment to Institutional Advancement

Mohammad Ali Rashed Lootah expressed that family businesses in Dubai have a rich economic legacy rooted in trust and expertise. He affirmed Dubai Chambers’ commitment to facilitating their transition to more advanced institutional models that align with global changes and new opportunities.

Lootah reiterated the organization’s dedication to preparing family businesses for future growth by promoting best practices in governance and developing frameworks that ensure continuity across generations. This effort aims to bolster their contributions to the national economy and reinforce Dubai’s status as a global business hub.

Engaging the Indian Business Community

The forum attracted 87 participants from the Indian family business community and members of the Indian Business and Professional Council. Discussions focused on governance regulation and leadership succession, which are essential for enhancing business stability and operational efficiency. The event also explored innovative strategies to improve operational performance and competitiveness on both local and global scales.

Advisory Services and Resources

In line with its mission to support family businesses, the Dubai Centre for Family Businesses, under Dubai Chambers, launched three specialized advisory services in 2025. These include the Current Situation Assessment and Family Charter Review service, the Family Charter Drafting service, and the Family Office Planning service.

Additionally, the center released its inaugural directory, featuring a comprehensive register of family business advisers in Dubai. This resource aims to facilitate access to specialized advisory services across key administrative and operational areas, connecting family businesses with trusted advisers.
