Vivek Ramaswamy Advances Past Primary, Prepares for Costly Ohio Governor Showdown with Amy Acton

Columbus, Ohio: Republican Vivek Ramaswamy is poised to transition from the primary season to the general election in his campaign for Ohio governor. With the primary concluding on Tuesday, Ramaswamy, endorsed by former President Donald Trump, is gearing up for a competitive race against Dr. Amy Acton, the former state health director.

Context of the Governor’s Race

This election cycle is particularly significant as every statewide executive office is open due to term limits. The governor’s race has garnered substantial attention, overshadowing other contests, including Ohio’s third competitive U.S. Senate race in four years and several closely contested U.S. House races expected in the fall.

Ramaswamy, who is also a candidate in the 2024 GOP presidential primary, emerged on Ohio’s political landscape early last year amid a significant shift. The ascension of then-Senator JD Vance to the vice presidency and the appointment of Jon Husted as his replacement created an opening at the top of the Republican ticket.

Ramaswamy’s Political Profile

Despite being a newcomer to state politics, Ramaswamy’s national profile, connections in the tech industry, and alignment with Trump facilitated his endorsement by the Ohio Republican Party. This endorsement helped him clear a competitive field that included the sitting state attorney general, state treasurer, and lieutenant governor.

Democrats, recognizing the opportunity presented by the open governor’s seat, are also preparing for a competitive race. Ohio, once a bellwether state, has leaned Republican during the Trump administration. Factors such as the president’s declining approval ratings on economic issues and growing dissatisfaction over the ongoing war in Iran contribute to the competitive landscape.

Amy Acton’s Emergence

Dr. Amy Acton, a physician and public health expert, has emerged as the Democratic candidate. She gained widespread recognition during the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, appearing alongside Republican Governor Mike DeWine in daily briefings. Her calm demeanor during the crisis endeared her to many Ohioans.

However, her administration’s strict measures, including business closures and school shutdowns, also drew criticism. Some individuals opposed to pandemic restrictions targeted her, leading to protests outside her home. Ramaswamy’s campaign has sought to leverage this lingering discontent by criticizing Acton’s role during the pandemic.

Primary Dynamics

Acton is unopposed in the Democratic primary, while Ramaswamy faces a challenge from Casey Putsch, an engineer and YouTube personality who has publicly criticized Ramaswamy’s Indian heritage and Hindu faith, branding him as an out-of-touch “tech bro.”

In the GOP primary for the Senate, Husted is unopposed in a special election to fill the remainder of the six-year Senate term previously held by Vance. Husted’s likely opponent will be Democrat Sherrod Brown, a former three-term senator who faced a significant loss against Republican Bernie Moreno in 2024, a race that saw spending reach $500 million. Brown is currently facing a minor challenge from first-time candidate Ron Kincaid.

Election Law Changes and Voter Engagement

Early voting commenced on April 7 under new election laws that include citizenship checks and the elimination of a four-day grace period for receiving mailed ballots. So far, there have been no widespread reports of issues related to these changes.

In light of recent redistricting that slightly favors Republicans, Ohio is experiencing numerous partisan congressional primaries. The most competitive GOP primary is in the Toledo area’s 9th District, where candidates are vying for the chance to challenge Democratic U.S. Representative Marcy Kaptur, the longest-serving woman in Congress.

Congressional Primaries and Competitive Races

The five-way contest in the 9th District includes former state Representative Derek Merrin, who narrowly lost to Kaptur in 2024, as well as an Air National Guard veteran, a healthcare worker, a sitting state representative, and Madison Sheahan, the former deputy director of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

In the Cincinnati area, Democratic U.S. Representative Greg Landsman faces a critical primary challenge. The three-way Republican primary includes Eric Conroy, a CIA and Air Force veteran endorsed by Trump, Vance, and Moreno. Landsman is also contending with a challenge from Damon Lynch IV, the grandson of a notable civil rights leader.

In the Akron area’s 13th District, five Republicans, including business owner Neil Patel, a former U.S. Senate candidate, are competing for the opportunity to face Democratic U.S. Representative Emilia Sykes.

As a national effort backed by Trump aims to reshape congressional maps in favor of Republicans, Ohio Democrats have opted for a unified approach, passing the redistricting map they received.

The newly redrawn 7th District in the Cleveland area has attracted eight Democratic candidates hoping to challenge Republican U.S. Representative Max Miller, a former senior adviser to Trump. Among them is former Cuyahoga County Executive Ed FitzGerald, who was the Democratic nominee for governor in 2014.

In northeast Ohio’s 14th District, former state Supreme Court Justice William O’Neill is among three Democrats seeking to challenge Republican U.S. Representative Dave Joyce, who faces two primary challengers.

In addition, six Democrats are on the ballot in the Dayton-area 10th District, represented by Republican U.S. Representative Mike Turner, while seven are competing in Republican U.S. Representative Michael Rulli’s 6th District along the Ohio River and five in the 5th District of Republican U.S. Representative Bob Latta.
