Youth Charter Calls for Strengthened Youth Engagement in Global Development Following 2026 UN ECOSOC Youth Forum
The Youth Charter has issued a significant call for a more youth-centered and action-oriented global communiqué following its active participation in the 2026 ECOSOC Youth Forum held at the United Nations Headquarters. This initiative urges the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) and all Member States to enhance youth engagement and bolster support for the burgeoning global sport for development movement, which is crucial for achieving the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Key Developments from the 2026 ECOSOC Youth Forum
The theme of this year’s Forum, “Advancing sustainable, inclusive, science- and evidence-based solutions for the 2030 Agenda,” facilitated inspiring dialogues among youth leaders, UN agencies, and Member States. However, the Youth Charter has identified a significant gap in the formal outputs of the Forum: the underrepresentation of youth-led, grassroots, and community-based solutions, particularly those leveraging sport, culture, and the arts.
As a United Nations-accredited NGO, the Youth Charter reaffirmed its commitment to its Global Youth Call2Action, which was presented during the Forum. This call emphasizes the necessity for governments and development partners to take specific actions.
Global Youth Call2Action
The Youth Charter’s Global Youth Call2Action outlines several key recommendations:
- Integration of Sport for Development: Governments are urged to incorporate sport for development into national youth strategies, educational systems, and community development frameworks.
- Adoption of the Youth Charter Community Campus Model: This model promotes place-based innovation to engage, equip, and empower young people through sport, art, culture, and digital learning.
- Investment in Social Coach Leadership Programmes: These programmes aim to train local mentors who can guide young people away from violence and disengagement, steering them towards purpose and opportunity.
- Youth as Co-Creators: It is essential that youth are not only consulted but also actively involved in shaping policies and initiatives aimed at achieving the 2030 Agenda.
Strengthening ECOSOC’s Role
The Youth Charter is advocating for greater recognition and integration of youth-focused outcomes from the ECOSOC Youth Forum into the formal Ministerial Declaration of the High-Level Political Forum (HLPF). This includes the establishment of an annual ECOSOC Youth Communiqué, co-created by youth, to ensure that their contributions are not only acknowledged but also incorporated into high-level decision-making processes.
Professor Geoff Thompson, Founder and Executive Chair of the Youth Charter, emphasized the importance of youth involvement in global development discussions.
