Seseko and Microsoft South Africa Launch High-Impact Digital Skills Program in 48 Underserved Schools
In a pivotal move to enhance digital inclusion in South Africa, Seseko, in collaboration with Microsoft South Africa, has successfully completed the initial phase of its AI, Robotics, and Coding Program. This initiative has reached 48 underserved schools across all nine provinces, marking a significant step forward in educational equity.
Bridging the Digital Skills Gap
The program introduces students to essential subjects such as artificial intelligence, robotics, and coding—areas that are increasingly shaping the global job market. The United Nations Development Programme (2023) indicates that over 70% of jobs worldwide are projected to require digital skills by 2030. This underscores the necessity of equipping young learners with these competencies at an early stage in their education.
Employing a comprehensive approach, the program extends beyond mere exposure to technology. Participating schools have received robotics kits and learning materials aligned with the Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement (CAPS), facilitating practical, hands-on learning experiences that translate abstract concepts into tangible skills. Additionally, educators have undergone specialized training, with all participating teachers obtaining accreditation from the South African Council for Educators (SACE). This ensures that the skills imparted are sustainably integrated into the educational framework.
Addressing Educational Inequalities
South Africa’s educational landscape is characterized by significant disparities in access to digital tools and resources. The World Bank (2024) reports that many learners in low-income communities still lack sufficient access to digital learning infrastructure, placing them at a disadvantage in an increasingly technology-driven world. Initiatives like this are vital for narrowing that gap, ensuring that students—regardless of their geographic or socio-economic status—gain access to the necessary tools and knowledge for success.
Impact on Youth Employment
Beyond its educational benefits, the program also addresses youth unemployment. A total of 96 youth facilitators have been recruited and deployed nationwide, providing a year of on-the-ground support to the participating schools. These facilitators play a crucial role in assisting educators, enhancing lesson delivery, and keeping students engaged throughout the program. This initiative not only cultivates digital skills among learners but also creates pathways for young individuals to acquire meaningful work experience.
The importance of integrating coding and robotics into South Africa’s education system has been emphasized by the Department of Basic Education (2024), which prioritizes these subjects as part of national curriculum reforms. However, many schools continue to face challenges related to infrastructure, resources, and teacher preparedness. The Seseko and Microsoft partnership addresses these issues simultaneously through the provision of equipment, curriculum alignment, and accredited teacher development, offering a scalable model for implementation.
Commitment to Future Generations
Bradley Maseko, CEO of Seseko, articulated the organization’s commitment to educational equity, stating that every learner deserves access to the skills that will shape their future. He emphasized that the program transcends mere technology introduction; it aims to unlock potential, build confidence, and create genuine opportunities for young people to engage in the digital economy.
Maseko noted that the partnership with Microsoft South Africa exemplifies the possibilities that arise when organizations unite under a shared vision. By combining infrastructure, training, and ongoing support, they aim to bridge the digital divide and establish a foundation for long-term, sustainable impact in underserved communities.
As industries evolve and digital transformation accelerates, early exposure to AI, robotics, and coding is becoming increasingly essential. These skills are foundational for participation in the modern workforce. By investing in both learners and educators, and by creating employment opportunities for young facilitators, Seseko is contributing to a more inclusive and future-ready South Africa.
Following the success of this initial phase, Seseko and Microsoft South Africa are exploring avenues to expand the program further, with the goal of reaching additional schools and enhancing impact across communities in need.
