Project Hail Mary Breaks Box Office Records as Ryan Gosling’s Film Sets Stage for Franchise Expansion

In a remarkable turn of events, Project Hail Mary has achieved a record-breaking debut at the global box office, marking a significant milestone for Amazon MGM Studios. The film, which features Ryan Gosling, tells the compelling story of a scientist and an alien named Rocky working together to save dying stars across the galaxy. This narrative resonated deeply with audiences, especially during the early weeks of the pandemic when existential themes were at the forefront of public consciousness.

Gosling acquired the rights to both star in and produce the film adaptation of Andy Weir’s novel, which was published a year after he received the manuscript. In spring 2020, he brought in Amy Pascal, the former Sony studio chief, to assist in producing the project. The film’s initial budget was set at $3 million, but following Amazon’s acquisition of MGM in 2022, the investment was officially increased to $190 million.

Record-Breaking Launch for Amazon MGM Studios

The film’s release over the weekend of March 20-22 has positioned Amazon MGM Studios to become a significant player in Hollywood, potentially the first new major studio in decades. Helen Moss, the newly appointed president of international distribution, is working to establish a robust international distribution operation, while Kevin Wilson continues to oversee domestic distribution. MGM lost its major studio status in the early 1970s and has since operated primarily as a domestic distributor. Currently, Sony is managing international distribution for Hail Mary, while Universal and Warner Bros. have handled recent Bond films and the Creed series.

Amazon MGM is now well-positioned to leverage its global presence, which may include discussions for a sequel to Hail Mary. While no formal talks have taken place between Weir and Amazon MGM regarding a sequel, insiders suggest that the possibility remains open, particularly given the merchandising potential of Rocky, portrayed by James Ortiz.

Both Amazon MGM and representatives for Weir have refrained from commenting on the prospect of a follow-up book or film. However, sources close to MGM have indicated that Weir retains control over the narrative. The acclaimed author has not previously written a sequel and is currently focused on a new, unrelated novel. He has mentioned considering sequel ideas but has not developed anything concrete.

A New Era for Amazon MGM

Regardless of the potential for a franchise, Hail Mary has significantly enhanced Amazon MGM’s credibility within the industry. The film has emerged as an unexpected box office success, a notable achievement for the sci-fi genre, which often struggles to attract mainstream audiences.

The film’s appeal has resonated with a diverse range of demographics, including families, contributing to its record-breaking launch. Hail Mary opened to $80.5 million in North America, marking the second-best debut in a decade for a non-sequel, non-franchise film, just behind Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, which debuted at $82.5 million. By March 25, just six days after its release, the film had surpassed $100 million at the domestic box office, achieving an early global total of $150 million.

Looking ahead, Amazon MGM, under the leadership of Courtenay Valenti in film and Sue Kroll in worldwide marketing, is poised to become an attractive destination for talent navigating the challenges posed by the Paramount-Warner Bros. merger and the diminishing number of opportunities for their projects.

Navigating Challenges to Reach the Screen

Hail Mary faced numerous challenges during its six-year journey to the big screen. The project endured MGM’s 2022 sale to Amazon, which led to the departure of co-heads Mike De Luca and Pam Abdy to Warner Bros. The film was initially established at MGM under De Luca’s leadership.

In a notable turn of events, Valenti transitioned from Warner Bros. to Amazon MGM. With over three decades at Warner Bros., she played a pivotal role in the Harry Potter franchise and other successful projects, including Margot Robbie’s Barbie, which featured Gosling as Ken.

Valenti championed Hail Mary, approving the $190 million project. Kroll, who also has a background at Warner Bros., was involved in the marketing of Gravity, another unexpected sci-fi hit. Both executives have established relationships with directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller from their collaboration on Warner Bros.’ The Lego Movie franchise.

Future Adaptations and Franchise Potential

Lord and Miller have expressed interest in adapting Weir’s second novel, Artemis, although they are currently engaged with the final Spider-Verse film and several other projects in development. Miller confirmed that a script for Artemis exists, and they have resolved challenges related to depicting one-sixth gravity, as the story is set on the moon.

The conclusion of Weir’s 2021 novel is subdued and somewhat melancholic, while the film adaptation maintains the same narrative beats but adopts a more celebratory tone. This approach positions the film as a potential launchpad for a sequel.

Comscore box office analyst Paul Dergerabedian noted that every successful franchise begins with a popular original film. The overwhelming audience interest in Project Hail Mary and its box office success provides Amazon MGM with a unique opportunity to cultivate a newly minted film franchise.
