Medvedev Secures Dubai Title After Griekspoor Withdrawal
Daniil Medvedev has claimed the Dubai Tennis Championships title after Tallon Griekspoor was forced to withdraw from the final due to a hamstring injury. This marks Medvedev’s second title at this event, having previously won in 2023.
Griekspoor suffered the injury during his semi-final match against Andrey Rublev, which he won in a tightly contested match with scores of 7-5, 7-6 (8-6). Following a medical assessment, tournament officials declared Griekspoor unfit to compete in the final.
Medvedev expressed his disappointment regarding the circumstances surrounding his victory, stating, “Not how I want to win a final. Hoping the injury for Tallon is not too bad and wishing him a speedy recovery.”
This victory is significant for Medvedev as it is the first time he has won the same tournament on two occasions. Prior to this, all 22 of his titles were secured at different events. He remarked, “That’s what is crazy about it. I never did it in any city in the world, and the first time I do it, it’s a walkover.”
Despite not playing in the final, Medvedev indicated that he felt he had performed well throughout the tournament, winning all his previous matches without dropping a set.
The former world number one has shown impressive form in recent months, winning two titles so far this year, which brings his total to three titles within the last four months.
As Medvedev prepares for upcoming tournaments, his management is actively seeking solutions for his travel to California for the Indian Wells tournament next week. This comes after the United Arab Emirates temporarily closed its airspace due to heightened tensions in the Middle East following military strikes by the United States and Israel.
In related news, Henry Patten from Great Britain and Harri Heliovaara from Finland secured their second consecutive title, defeating Marcelo Arevalo and Mate Pavic in the men’s doubles final with a score of 7-5, 7-5. The pair has recorded three titles in four tournaments this year.
