“Sinners” Secures Top Actor Award, Strengthening Oscars Contender Status
The supernatural thriller “Sinners” has captured the Actor Award for best movie cast, a significant achievement that positions it as a formidable contender for the coveted Best Picture award at the upcoming Oscars. The announcement was made during a ceremony held in Los Angeles on Sunday.
Delroy Lindo accepted the award, joined on stage by fellow cast members. The film, produced by Warner Bros, unfolds the narrative of two brothers establishing a juke joint in the segregation-era South, encountering a vampire alongside themes celebrating blues music and Black culture.
Expressing gratitude at the event, which was streamed live on Netflix, Lindo remarked, “Every single day we brought ourselves, we brought our hearts, we brought our souls, we brought our spirits to this endeavor. To be recognized by you all, thank you does not even begin to encompass the gratitude that we feel.”
Michael B. Jordan, who portrays both brothers Smoke and Stack, was honored as best film actor. He extended his appreciation to fellow nominees, which included “Marty Supreme” star Timothée Chalamet and Leonardo DiCaprio from “One Battle After Another.” Jordan stated, “This ride has been unbelievable, and I thank you for welcoming me in and making me feel seen.”
Sean Penn received the Actor Award for a supporting role in “One Battle After Another,” which has performed strongly at various recent awards shows and is seen as a frontrunner for the Oscars. The film, centered on a revolutionary-turned-father striving to save his daughter’s life, won the top trophy at the Producers Guild Awards, an accolade that often predicts the eventual Best Picture winner at the Oscars scheduled for March 15.
The recognition for “Sinners” from SAG-AFTRA members indicates significant support within Hollywood, enhancing its chances as awards season progresses.
Among other awards, Jessie Buckley was named best actress for her role as Agnes Hathaway, the wife of William Shakespeare, in “Hamnet.” Amy Madigan won the award for best supporting actress in a movie for her role as Aunt Gladys in the horror film “Weapons.”
In television categories, the late Catherine O’Hara was honored as the best female actor in a television comedy for her portrayal of a movie producer in “The Studio.” Seth Rogen accepted the award on her behalf, highlighting O’Hara’s kindness and her insightful contributions to the writing process, saying, “It showed you can be a genius and can be kind, and one of those things does not have to come at the expense of the other.”
“The Studio” won the Actor Award for best cast in a TV comedy, while “The Pitt” was awarded best cast in a TV drama.
Harrison Ford received a lifetime achievement award, reflecting on his enduring career with humor. “People I once thought were misfits and geeks turned out to be my people,” he noted. Currently starring in the TV series “Shrinking,” Ford remarked, “I’m indeed a lucky guy. Lucky to have found my people, lucky to find work that challenges me, lucky to still be doing it. I don’t take that for granted.”
These awards serve as a strong indicator of the films and performances that may dominate the 95th Academy Awards, highlighting the dynamic and competitive landscape of modern cinema.
