Dubai Unveils Its First Driverless RT6 Taxi Service
A Landmark Development in Smart Transportation
Dubai has made a significant leap forward in the realm of smart transportation with the introduction of fully autonomous RT6 taxis, developed by Baidu’s Apollo Go. This innovative service was officially launched by Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Crown Prince of Dubai and Deputy Prime Minister. The public will have the opportunity to experience this futuristic travel option starting in early 2026.
The Technology Behind RT6 Taxis
The RT6 represents Baidu’s sixth generation of driverless taxi technology, boasting over 40 advanced sensors, including high-precision LiDAR systems, multi-band radars, and sophisticated cameras. This confluence of technology enables the vehicle to perceive its environment, adhere to traffic regulations, and make safe, real-time decisions on the road.
The operational capabilities of the RT6 are powered by cutting-edge software that integrates deep learning algorithms, high-definition mapping, and live data streams. This level of technological sophistication allows the vehicle to navigate busy urban streets while interacting safely with pedestrians and other road users.
Proven Global Performance
Baidu’s RT6 taxis come backed by a wealth of experience, having already driven over 150 million kilometers and completed over 10 million rides globally. These extensive trials have enabled the development of robust operational models poised for commercial rollout, meeting the demands of high-volume transportation needs.
Collaboration and Regulatory Framework
The introduction of RT6 taxi services in Dubai is a result of a strategic partnership between the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) and Baidu Apollo Go. This collaboration formally began at the World Government Summit in 2025, where the two entities explored opportunities in autonomous mobility. Following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), trials on selected roads commenced within just 10 months, underscoring Dubai’s efficient regulatory environment and commitment to smart infrastructure.
A Central Operations Hub
In line with this initiative, Baidu Apollo Go has established its first operations and control center outside China, located in Dubai’s Science Park. This facility spans 2,000 square meters and is crucial for overseeing the driverless fleet. The center is equipped to manage daily operations, monitor vehicle performance, and implement software updates and maintenance routines, ensuring optimal functioning of the autonomous vehicles.
Future Expansion Plans
Dubai’s ambitions extend beyond the initial rollout of the RT6 taxis; plans are already in place to scale the autonomous fleet to over 1,000 vehicles in the coming years. This development highlights the city’s goal to not only enhance mobility but also improve the quality of life for both residents and visitors.
Previous Initiatives in Autonomous Transportation
The journey toward modernizing transportation in Dubai began earlier, notably in 2021, when Sheikh Hamdan announced that the San Francisco-based autonomous vehicle company, Cruise, would provide shuttle services for the city. This partnership aims to deploy 4,000 autonomous electric pods by 2030, further solidifying Dubai’s position as a leader in transportation innovation.
