Performing for the Diaspora
When Ben&Ben takes the stage for Filipinos living abroad, there’s a profound significance attached. These performances are not just gigs but heartfelt gatherings that resonate deeply with the audience. Andrew explains the weight of this experience: “Many of these individuals have made tough decisions to leave home in pursuit of opportunities or to support their families. Sharing a concert after a year of hard work is incredibly meaningful.”
The band views their overseas concerts as a vital responsibility. Their goal is to create memorable moments that uplift spirits and forge connections. Miguel highlights how playing in cities like Dubai encourages the band to explore their cultural roots further. “When we perform internationally, we feel a sense of pride representing Filipino stories and experiences. Each show abroad is a great honor for us,” he remarks.
Protecting Peace Through Success
Ben&Ben is unapologetic about the importance of mental health and the need for kindness. Jam openly acknowledges the paradox of success, stating that while it opens doors, it can also lead to situations that test personal boundaries. “Success brings many opportunities, but it also exposes you to various challenges,” she explains. “You’re constantly encountering new people and dealing with diverse pressures, which can feel overwhelming.”
Despite these challenges, the band finds solace in their unity. Peace, for them, stems from their connection as a band. Toni beautifully likens songs to companions: “I see songs as friends that support people through different phases of life. We want our music to resonate with joy, heartbreak, and personal growth, helping listeners connect with their emotions and understand themselves better.”
Miguel adds that feelings like anger and sadness naturally arise in love. However, love should not end in negativity. “We want our music to guide listeners back toward hope and positivity, even when the world tries to suggest otherwise,” he explains.
Staying Rooted While Growing Global
As their music reaches international audiences, Ben&Ben remains committed to embracing their Filipino identity without feeling confined. Paolo emphasizes that staying grounded begins with regular engagement in the Philippines, fostering connections with its culture and people. “International performances broaden our horizons through cultural exchange,” he states. “This enables us to share our Filipino identity while learning from those we meet, allowing our music to evolve while maintaining its roots.”
A Song Inspired by Dubai
When asked about what a song inspired by Dubai would be like, the band members offered thoughtful insights. Toni suggested a title, “Buhangin,” which means “sand” in Filipino. Reflecting on one of their fond memories in Dubai, she recalled visiting the sand dunes. For her, sand symbolizes the passage of time and fleeting moments, embodying Dubai’s fast-paced environment. “A song centered around appreciating the present would resonate well with people here,” she believes.
Through thoughtful lyrics that capture their experiences and connections, Ben&Ben continues to bridge cultures and bring meaningful music to their audiences, reminding everyone of the beauty of both home and newfound places.
