FIFA’s Best Awards Transition to Dubai for a New Era
As of January 1, FIFA’s prestigious Best Awards—a spectacle that first dazzled audiences in 2017—will undergo a significant transformation. After parting ways with the long-standing Ballon d’Or awards, FIFA has now decided to relocate its Best Awards to Dubai, establishing a new partnership with the Dubai Sports Council (DSC).
A Shift in Venue and Vision
Beginning in December of this year, the awards ceremony will be held in Dubai, following a Memorandum of Understanding between FIFA and the DSC, which was recently signed during the World Sports Summit in Dubai. This marks a pivotal moment as FIFA aims to present itself as the host of the “only official annual FIFA awards ceremony” that celebrates the top talents and teams in football from the preceding year.
FIFA’s Commitment to Celebrating Football
FIFA President Gianni Infantino expressed enthusiasm for this new chapter, stating, “We are delighted to join forces with Dubai, a city that lives and breathes football, as we develop this world-class event.” According to Infantino, the awards will serve not just as a ceremony, but as an innovative platform to honor the standout performers in football, both on and off the field.
Challenges Ahead for FIFA
Despite the ambitious rhetoric surrounding the awards, FIFA faces the ongoing challenge of establishing the Best Awards as a credible alternative to the Ballon d’Or. While the Best Awards have generated visibility, they still struggle to match the respected editorial processes that the Ballon d’Or is known for. This is a gap that the DSC now aims to address as they take on this new project.
What’s Next for the Awards?
Details concerning award categories, nomination procedures, and voting mechanisms are yet to be disclosed by FIFA. There is currently uncertainty about whether the “Best” branding will continue as part of the awards’ identity. However, upcoming announcements are anticipated as the organization works on finalizing logistics.
Dubai’s Role in Global Football
Sheikh Mansoor bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Chairman of the Dubai Sports Council, highlighted the strong collaboration between FIFA and Dubai. This partnership has already led to numerous initiatives that impact the global football landscape. “We are pleased to announce this new agreement, which underscores the continued cooperation between us and reflects Dubai’s prominent position on the global football map,” Sheikh Mansoor stated.
Furthermore, this partnership symbolizes Dubai’s commitment to the development of football worldwide, setting the stage for initiatives that honor extraordinary individuals and host significant sporting events. Dubai aims to enhance its role in shaping football’s future, reinforcing its position as a central hub in the world of sports.
